Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Brisbane over the years, and the W on North Quay is honestly one of those places that just gets it right. You know how some five-star hotels feel stuffy and make you worry about touching anything? This isn’t that. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this energy – maybe it’s the music they’re playing or the way the light hits those floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river, but it feels alive rather than precious.
The location is actually perfect if you know Brisbane at all. You’re right there on the river with the Story Bridge practically outside your window, but more importantly, you can walk to Eagle Street Pier in about three minutes (great for dinner, by the way), and Queen Street Mall is just across the Victoria Bridge if you’re into shopping. What I really appreciate is that you’re close enough to South Bank to stroll over for a coffee along the boardwalk, but far enough from the weekend crowds that you’re not dealing with that chaos. Parking is valet only – which, okay, adds to the cost – but honestly, in the CBD, you’d be paying through the nose for parking anyway, and at least this way you don’t have to circle blocks looking for a spot.
The rooms are where this place really shines, though. I mean, the design is sleek without being cold, if that makes sense. The beds are ridiculously comfortable (and I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathrooms have these deep soaking tubs that actually fit a normal-sized human being. What really impressed me was the attention to small details – the lighting has multiple settings so you’re not stuck with harsh overhead lights, and there are plenty of outlets near the bed, which seems basic but you’d be surprised how many hotels mess this up. The river views are spectacular, especially at sunset when the light bounces off the water and hits the city buildings. Fair warning though – if you’re a light sleeper, the North Quay side can get a bit noisy with traffic during morning rush hour, but it’s not terrible.
The staff actually knows what they’re doing, which is refreshing. Check-in was smooth, they remembered my name without constantly checking their computer, and when I mentioned I was in town for a conference, they gave me solid restaurant recommendations that weren’t just the usual touristy spots. The concierge pointed me toward Gerard’s Bistro (which was fantastic) and actually knew the best time to visit the Gallery of Modern Art to avoid crowds. You know what really sold me? When it started absolutely pouring one afternoon – you know how Brisbane rain can be – they had umbrellas ready at the front desk without me even asking. It’s those little things that make you feel like they’re paying attention rather than just going through the motions.
Is it expensive? Yeah, it’s definitely not budget territory. But if you’re celebrating something special or just want to feel pampered for a few days, it’s worth it. The whole experience feels effortless, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to unwind or impress someone you’re traveling with.
