You know what caught me off guard about The Melbourne Residences?
You know what caught me off guard about The Melbourne Residences? The name’s honestly a bit misleading – I mean, you’re definitely in Brisbane, not Melbourne, and it sits right there in South Brisbane where you can actually see the city skyline across the river. But once you get past the quirky branding, this place really grows on you.
The location is actually pretty brilliant if you know Brisbane at all. You’re walking distance to the South Bank Parklands (which, let’s be honest, is where you’ll probably end up spending half your time anyway), and the ferry terminal is right there when you want to hop across to the CBD without dealing with traffic. I stayed here during a rugby weekend and was expecting total chaos, but the building’s set back enough from the main South Bank strip that you don’t get hammered by noise. The apartments themselves feel more like someone’s actual home than a hotel room – proper kitchen with a full-size fridge, washer and dryer that actually work, and those floor-to-ceiling windows that make the space feel way bigger than it probably is. The furniture’s not fancy, but it’s comfortable in that lived-in way, and honestly, after a day of wandering around Brisbane’s heat, you just want somewhere that feels real.
What really sold me was the little stuff they get right. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no hovering staff trying to upsell you on breakfast packages or spa treatments. The parking garage is secure and doesn’t require some ridiculous maneuvering to get your car in (if you’ve stayed in Brisbane before, you know this is actually a big deal). And the pool area, while not huge, catches the afternoon sun perfectly and stays open late enough that you can actually use it after sightseeing. The 4-star rating feels about right – it’s not trying to be the Langham or anything, but everything works, it’s clean, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. I’d actually say the 8.5 rating is pretty fair, maybe even a touch conservative. My only real gripe is that the WiFi gets a bit spotty on higher floors during peak hours, and the air conditioning units are loud enough that you’ll notice them if you’re a light sleeper. But for families or anyone planning to stay more than a couple nights, this place makes way more sense than cramming into a traditional hotel room in the city center. Plus, you’re close enough to walk to Good Street for coffee in the morning, and that alone might be worth the stay.
