Look, I’ll be straight with you about Summer House Brisbane – it’s one of those places that grows on you the longer you stay. First time I walked into the lobby, I honestly wasn’t blown away or anything, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it that I actually appreciate now. The whole vibe is sort of “we’re not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but we know what we’re doing.”
The location on Upper Roma Street is actually pretty clever if you know Brisbane at all. You’re right there in the CBD without being stuck in the thick of Queen Street’s tourist chaos, and honestly, that makes all the difference. I mean, you can still walk to everything – the Treasury Casino is literally a five-minute stroll if that’s your thing, and you’re close enough to South Bank that you don’t need to stress about transport. What I really like is that you can duck out to Roma Street Parkland when you need to escape the concrete jungle for a bit. The staff mentioned that a lot of business travelers choose this spot because it’s near the government buildings, but far enough from the backpacker strip that you actually get some peace at night.
Here’s what actually matters: the rooms are solid without being flashy, and the air conditioning works properly (you know how Brisbane gets in summer). The beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up with a crick in my neck, and there’s decent space to spread out your stuff – not massive, but you’re not playing Tetris with your luggage either. The Wi-Fi is reliable, which honestly puts it ahead of some pricier places I’ve stayed. One thing that surprised me was how quiet it stays at night, even being in the CBD. I was expecting more street noise, but the windows must be pretty decent because I slept fine. The breakfast situation is… well, it’s there. Nothing fancy, but it’ll get you started for the day without having to hunt down a café first thing.
What really won me over was the little stuff – like how the front desk actually knows the neighborhood and can point you toward the good coffee spots (there’s this place on Edward Street they recommended that I never would’ve found otherwise). The housekeeping team is thorough without being intrusive, and check-in was surprisingly smooth even when I arrived way earlier than I should have. Look, it’s not going to make anyone’s Instagram-worthy hotel list, but sometimes you just want a place that does the basics well without the fuss. For the price point and location, especially if you’re in Brisbane for work or you’re the type who spends most of your time exploring rather than lounging in your room, Summer House Brisbane makes a lot of sense. Just don’t expect champagne service on a beer budget – though honestly, the beer budget approach works just fine here.

Very good The hostel was exactly as advertised and more. I loved that there were themed nights to give you something to do if you didn’t have any plans. The staff were amazing and everyone was so welcoming. The laundry facilities were clean and so was the kitchen.
What could be improved: The bathrooms do need a re-grouting and a bit of an update but overall it’s not too bad. The beds may be a bit firm for some but I prefer a bit more firmness.
Good value for money, location is great, activities are good, but the only thing I didn’t like was that the room didn’t The location
What could be improved: My room didn’t have windows and the aircon was set to 25° and despite everything the room didn’t feel ventilated
