Spicers Balfour Hotel
Spicers Balfour Hotel
You know what strikes you first about Spicers Balfour?
You know what strikes you first about Spicers Balfour? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in New Farm, but honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the buzzing café strip along Brunswick Street, but when you step inside this beautifully restored heritage building, it feels like you’ve discovered some secret boutique hideaway that most tourists completely miss.
The thing about New Farm is that it’s got this perfect balance – it’s close enough to the city that you can walk across the Story Bridge or catch a quick CityCat ride, but it’s got its own personality. And Spicers Balfour really captures that vibe. The restoration work they’ve done here is honestly impressive; they’ve kept all the character of the original Queenslander architecture (you’ll notice those gorgeous high ceilings and wraparound verandas), but everything feels fresh and luxurious without being stuffy. The rooms are spacious – actually spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious – and the attention to detail is pretty remarkable. I’m talking about things like the locally-sourced artwork, the quality of the linens, even the way they’ve designed the bathrooms with those beautiful terrazzo finishes.
What really sets this place apart though is how it sits in the neighborhood. You’re surrounded by some of Brisbane’s best coffee spots (Sourced Grocer is literally around the corner, and their weekend brunch situation is legendary), plus you’ve got the New Farm Park right there along the river – perfect for morning runs or just sitting under those massive fig trees. The hotel staff actually know the area too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. They’ll point you toward the good stuff, like the Saturday markets at the park or which nights to hit up the Powerhouse for events. Parking can be a bit tricky in New Farm generally, but the hotel sorts that out for you. And here’s something I appreciated – the building’s set back from the street enough that you don’t get the noise from Brunswick Street, but you’re still close enough to stumble home after dinner at one of those excellent Vietnamese places up the road. The 9.1 rating makes complete sense once you’ve stayed here; it’s that rare combination of genuine luxury and authentic local character that’s hard to find in Brisbane’s hotel scene.

Intimate & boutique hotel. Beautifully appointed with eclectic decor. Friendly & attentive staff. Great breakfast menu & we enjoyed a delicious evening meal.
had breakfast on the beautiful verandah surrounded by frangipani trees (lit up at night). It's not a buffet breakfast, but there's lots of choices including some unusual dishes that were very yummy.
Delighful boutique hotel. Beautifully appointed modern room with all amenities. Quiet and beautifully decorated room. Location was great. Easy walk to the Howard Street wharves and the CBD as well as Fortitude valley. Restaurant was excellent.
The bedrooms were spacious and well decorated. We liked the automatic door opening when leaving and the code for our room instead of a key.
