Emporium Hotel South Bank

You know what struck me first about the Emporium Hotel South Bank? It’s that perfect sweet spot where you feel like you’re staying somewhere genuinely luxurious without all the stuffy pretense that usually comes with five-star places. I mean, the location alone – right there on Grey Street – puts you in the heart of South Brisbane where you can actually walk to everything that matters.

The building itself has this modern industrial vibe that somehow feels warm rather than cold, which is honestly pretty rare. When you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about how people move through spaces. The lobby doesn’t feel like a museum where you’re afraid to touch anything, and the staff – well, they’re genuinely helpful without being overly rehearsed about it. I stayed there during the Brisbane Festival last year, and even though the South Bank was absolutely packed, the hotel never felt chaotic or overwhelmed. The rooms are what really got me though – they’ve got these floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel like you’re floating above the city, and the bathrooms (this might sound weird) actually have decent water pressure, which you’d be surprised how many fancy places mess up.

Here’s what I really appreciated: you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Brisbane Wheel and all the South Bank Parklands, but the hotel sits just far enough back that you don’t get the constant noise from the weekend crowds. The rooftop bar – and I’m not usually a rooftop bar person – actually has one of the best views of the Brisbane River I’ve seen, especially around sunset when the city lights start reflecting off the water. Parking can be a bit pricey (welcome to South Bank), but honestly, once you’re there, you barely need a car since you can walk across the Goodwill Bridge to the CBD in about ten minutes, or catch the ferry right from the terminal nearby. The restaurant downstairs does this interesting take on modern Australian cuisine that’s actually worth eating at, rather than just being hotel food that happens to be expensive. What really sealed it for me though was the little details – like how the elevators are actually fast, the WiFi works everywhere (even in the bathroom, not that I checked or anything), and the beds are that perfect firmness where you don’t wake up feeling like you’ve been wrestling with marshmallows all night. It’s the kind of place where you end up extending your stay if you can, which is exactly what happened to me.
