Look, I’ll be straight with you about the Kennigo Hotel – it’s one of those places that actually gets Fortitude Valley right. You know how some hotels just plop themselves down in a neighborhood without really understanding it? This isn’t that. The building itself has this industrial-chic thing going on that fits perfectly with the Valley’s whole converted-warehouse vibe, and honestly, walking up to it feels like you’re about to check into something that belongs here.
The location is what really sold me though. I mean, you’re right in the thick of Fortitude Valley – which, if you don’t know Brisbane, is basically where the city goes to let its hair down. You’ve got the Fortitude Music Hall practically around the corner, and all those little laneway bars that locals actually frequent are within stumbling distance. But here’s the thing that surprised me: despite being in the middle of all that action, the rooms are actually pretty quiet. I was expecting to hear every conversation from the street below, but the windows do their job. Though I’d still request a room facing away from Brunswick Street if you’re a really light sleeper – weekends can get a bit lively down there.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know their stuff about the area. The front desk guy – I think his name was Marcus – didn’t just give me the standard tourist spiel. He pointed me toward this little Vietnamese place on Duncan Street that I never would have found otherwise, and steered me away from the obvious tourist traps. The rooms themselves are solid – not huge, but thoughtfully designed with decent storage and a bathroom that actually has enough space to move around. The bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with it all night, which honestly is more than I can say for some places charging similar rates. There’s this nice balance between modern amenities and not trying too hard to be trendy – like, there’s good WiFi and USB ports where you need them, but they didn’t go overboard with weird lighting or furniture that looks cool but isn’t practical. Oh, and parking – since someone always asks – there’s a garage underneath, which in Fortitude Valley is basically gold. Street parking around there is either impossible or you’re playing meter roulette. The hotel rate for parking isn’t cheap, but it’s Brisbane city fringe, so what do you expect? It’s still better than circling blocks looking for a spot or walking ten minutes from wherever you finally found one.
