Edward Lodge New Fam
Edward Lodge New Fam
Look, I've stayed at plenty of places around Brisbane, and Edward Lodge New Fam honestly surprised me in the best way possible.
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places around Brisbane, and Edward Lodge New Fam honestly surprised me in the best way possible. The name’s a bit quirky – I mean, what’s with the “New Fam” part? – but don’t let that throw you off. This place sits right on Sydney Street in New Farm, and you know what? That’s actually prime real estate. You’re basically a five-minute walk from the Powerhouse, which is perfect if you’re into arts stuff or just want decent coffee that doesn’t cost your firstborn. The building itself has this sort of understated elegance – it’s not trying too hard to be boutique-y, but it’s definitely a step up from your standard hotel chain.
What really got me was how quiet it stays despite being on a main street. I was expecting traffic noise all night (Sydney Street can get pretty busy during the day), but honestly, once you’re inside, it’s surprisingly peaceful. The rooms are actually spacious – and I don’t mean “spacious for Brisbane” where everything’s cramped, I mean genuinely roomy. There’s this attention to detail that you don’t always see in four-star places… like, the lighting actually works for reading in bed, and the bathroom has enough counter space for your toiletries without playing Tetris. The staff seem to know the area really well too, which is rare. When I asked about getting to South Bank without dealing with the CBD traffic, the front desk guy gave me this local route that saved me probably twenty minutes.
Here’s the thing about New Farm – and this is why Edward Lodge’s location is so clever – you’re close enough to walk into the city when you want that urban energy, but far enough out that you get to experience actual Brisbane neighborhood life. James Street is literally around the corner with all those boutiques and cafes, and the weekend farmers market at the Powerhouse is something you’d miss if you stayed in the CBD. The ferry terminal’s about a ten-minute walk, which honestly beats dealing with parking in the city. I did notice the area gets pretty lively on Friday and Saturday nights (New Farm’s got that going on), but like I said, the hotel itself stays remarkably quiet. Parking’s included, which – let’s be real – is becoming a luxury in Brisbane these days. The whole experience felt less like staying in a hotel and more like crashing at a friend’s really nice place in a neighborhood you’d actually want to live in. For a 9.2 rating, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for without any of that over-the-top service that makes you feel awkward.
