Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Gabba Central Apartments on Stanley Street, I wasn’t expecting much. The building’s got that modern apartment block look that could be anywhere, but you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you from the outside.
What actually won me over was how ridiculously practical this place is. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Gabba (hence the name, obviously), which is perfect if you’re here for the cricket or rugby – I mean, you can practically hear the crowd roar from some of the rooms during big matches. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: Woolloongabba has become this weird little foodie pocket of Brisbane. There’s this Vietnamese place called Pho Hung Vuong just down Stanley Street that locals absolutely swear by, and honestly, stumbling across it felt like finding a secret. The apartments themselves are… well, they’re apartments. Clean, functional, with that slightly sterile feel you get in newer builds. The kitchens are actually decent though – proper-sized fridges, not those hotel mini-bar things – which matters when you’re staying more than a couple nights. I appreciated that they didn’t go overboard with fancy touches that break after two guests; everything just works.
The 7.4 rating makes sense to me because it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it delivers exactly what it promises. Parking was surprisingly easy (and free, which in Brisbane is basically a miracle), though the building can get a bit echoey when people are dragging suitcases around early morning – something to keep in mind if you’re a light sleeper. The staff at check-in were actually helpful rather than just polite, if you know what I mean. They gave me proper directions to places instead of just pointing vaguely down the street. What really sold me on the location was discovering how connected you are to everything. Sure, you’re not in the CBD, but the train station is right there, and getting into the city takes maybe ten minutes. Plus – and this is something I only figured out on day three – you’re walking distance to South Bank without having to deal with all the tourist crowds around the main entrances. There’s this back way through the residential streets that locals use, and suddenly you’re at the river without the chaos. The whole Woolloongabba area has this lived-in feel that I actually preferred to staying right in the thick of things. You’ve got proper grocery stores, decent coffee (that’s crucial in Brisbane), and it’s quiet enough to actually sleep. It’s not going to wow you with luxury touches or Instagram-worthy lobby shots, but sometimes you just want a place that feels like a good base camp rather than a destination itself.
