Courtyard by Marriott Brisbane South Bank
Courtyard by Marriott Brisbane South Bank

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Courtyard by Marriott on Vulture Street, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, it’s a Marriott, right? But this South Bank location actually surprised me in the best way possible. The building itself has this clean, modern vibe that doesn’t scream “corporate hotel,” and once you’re inside, you realize they’ve put some real thought into making it feel less… sterile than your typical chain property.
What really got me was the location – and I don’t mean that in the usual “conveniently located” marketing speak way. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the South Bank Parklands, which honestly is one of Brisbane’s best-kept secrets if you’re not from around here. I’d grab my morning coffee from the lobby (decent, not amazing, but it’ll do) and wander over to the river walk before the day got too hot. The rooms face different directions, so if you can swing it, ask for one overlooking the parklands side – trust me on this one. The Vulture Street side gets a bit of traffic noise, nothing terrible, but you know how it is when you’re trying to sleep off jet lag.
The staff here actually seem to know the area, which is rarer than you’d think. The front desk folks gave me solid recommendations for dinner spots that weren’t just the usual tourist traps – pointed me toward some great Vietnamese places on Hardgrave Road that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a 4-star Marriott, but they’ve got these little touches that make a difference. The shower pressure is fantastic (seriously, after a long day walking around Brisbane’s hills, this matters), and the beds are firm without being like sleeping on concrete. There’s actually decent workspace if you need to get some work done, with plenty of outlets and decent WiFi that doesn’t cut out every ten minutes.
Parking can be a bit of a pain during weekend events – South Bank gets pretty busy when there’s something happening at the convention center – but the hotel’s garage is secure and you’re not circling the block looking for street parking. The breakfast situation is solid without being extraordinary, though I’d recommend skipping it on weekends when it gets crowded and hitting up one of the cafes nearby instead. You know what really impressed me though? The pool area. It’s not huge, but it’s got this nice urban oasis feel to it, and it’s usually quiet during the day. Perfect for unwinding after dealing with Brisbane’s surprisingly intense summer heat.
The whole experience just felt… comfortable, I guess? Like staying at a friend’s place who happens to have their act together. The 8.7 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it delivers on the basics really well and throws in enough extras to make you feel like you made a good choice. Plus, being right there in South Bank means you’re walking distance to the cultural precinct, the river, and some genuinely good food without having to deal with the chaos of staying right in the CBD.
