You know what caught me off guard about City Backpackers HQ?
You know what caught me off guard about City Backpackers HQ? It’s actually way more polished than the name suggests. I mean, when you hear “backpackers,” you’re probably picturing cramped dorms with questionable shower situations, but this place sits right there on Upper Roma Street feeling more like a boutique hostel that just happens to cater to budget travelers. The location is honestly perfect if you want to be in the thick of Brisbane without paying CBD hotel prices – you’re literally a five-minute walk from Central Station, which means you can catch trains to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast without dealing with city traffic. Plus, Roma Street Parkland is right there when you need to escape the concrete jungle for a bit.
The building itself has this interesting industrial-meets-modern vibe going on, and I have to say, whoever designed the common areas actually gets how travelers want to hang out. There’s this massive communal kitchen that doesn’t feel like a cafeteria, and the rooftop area – well, let’s just say you’ll end up there way more than you planned, especially during those sticky Brisbane evenings when the city lights start twinkling. The rooms are surprisingly quiet considering you’re basically in the heart of everything, though I’d probably avoid the street-facing ones if you’re a light sleeper (Upper Roma can get a bit busy with early morning traffic). What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between social hostel energy and actually being able to get some decent sleep – the soundproofing between rooms is solid, and they’ve clearly thought about things like reading lights and power outlets near every bed.
Here’s the thing though – and this is where that 4.5-star rating makes sense – the staff genuinely knows Brisbane. Not just the touristy stuff, but like, where to grab the best coffee on a Sunday morning (hint: it’s not in the Queen Street Mall), which markets are worth hitting up, and how to navigate the river ferry system without looking like a complete tourist. The check-in process is refreshingly straightforward, and they’ve got that luggage storage thing down to a science if you’re arriving early or leaving late. Honestly, the only minor gripe I have is that the WiFi can get a bit sluggish during peak hours when everyone’s uploading their Story Bridge photos, but that’s pretty standard for shared accommodations. If you’re looking for a base in Brisbane that doesn’t feel like you’re roughing it but won’t completely destroy your budget, this place hits that mark perfectly – especially if you’re the type who wants to actually experience the city rather than just passing through.

What Our Guests Say
Awesome location, nice view, clean, not so expensive.
Great valu for money..overall friendly staff and clean rooms
Private double room was great, good staff, pool area is nice, chilled atmosphere.
Clean bathrooms and nice balcony.
The private room we got was great, small but had what we needed.
Really nice property. Spacious communal areas, including a little cafe to get coffee and snacks. We had a private double room which had plenty of space for 2 people :)
I liked the social aspect, the only down side would be the early 9pm stop drinking, 10pm would be abit more reasonable especially as its quite a socially focused hostel.
I liked the variety in games available, I wish the pool was either way cheaper or free to play, $1 per game would bring in more games being played and encourage others to play together especially if it's raining. Over all happy with my stay, even extended my stay one night very easily 😊
common area
Nice rooftop and common areas.
Nice location and really good vibe. Friendly staff
