So I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to YHA Brisbane City on Upper Roma Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a hostel. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. The building itself has this clean, modern vibe that’s way more polished than your typical backpacker joint, and you can tell they’ve put real thought into the design. What really got me though was the location – you’re literally a five-minute walk from Roma Street Station, which means you can catch trains to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast without dealing with Brisbane’s somewhat chaotic bus system. Plus, and this is key if you’re planning to explore, you’re close enough to the Queen Street Mall that you can walk there, but far enough up the hill that you’re not drowning in weekend crowds and street noise.

The rooms are honestly better than some boutique hotels I’ve stayed in – clean lines, decent storage (and if you’ve ever lived out of a suitcase, you know how much that matters), and the beds are actually comfortable. I mean, hostel beds have this reputation for being basically camping cots, but these feel like they invested in proper mattresses. The common areas are where this place really shines though. There’s this rooftop terrace that gives you these sweeping views over the city, and honestly, it’s the perfect spot for a beer after a day of wandering around South Bank or getting lost in the laneways. The kitchen facilities are solid too – full-sized fridges, proper cooking equipment, not just a sad hot plate and a microwave like some places. I actually cooked there a few times and didn’t feel like I was roughing it.

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between social hostel energy and actually being able to get some sleep. The soundproofing is surprisingly good – Brisbane can get pretty lively, especially on weekends when everyone’s heading to the Valley, but I never felt like I was camping in the middle of a street party. The staff genuinely seem to know the city well too, not just the tourist highlights but actual local spots. They pointed me toward this little coffee place on Edward Street that I never would’ve found otherwise, and it became my morning routine. Check-in was smooth, parking’s available if you’re driving (though honestly, you probably won’t need a car much), and the whole vibe just feels more grown-up than your average backpacker spot. For the price point and that 4.5-star rating, you’re getting serious value – especially considering you’re right in the CBD and not stuck out in some suburb trying to figure out Brisbane’s transit system.
