You know what struck me first about the voco Brisbane City Centre?
You know what struck me first about the voco Brisbane City Centre? It’s that sweet spot where you’re right in the thick of things without feeling like you’re sleeping inside a construction zone. The building sits on North Quay – and I mean literally right there overlooking the Brisbane River – so you’ve got this fantastic view situation happening if you snag a river-facing room. Actually, even from the lobby you can see the Story Bridge doing its thing, which honestly never gets old.
The whole voco brand is sort of IHG’s attempt at being boutique-ish without going full pretentious, and they’ve actually nailed it here. The rooms have this clean, modern vibe that doesn’t scream “corporate hotel” – more like someone with good taste decorated their really nice apartment. I mean, you’ve still got your standard hotel carpet (why is it always carpet?), but the design feels intentional rather than focus-grouped to death. The beds are properly comfortable too, not just Instagram-pretty, which matters when you’re dealing with jet lag or you’ve spent the day walking around South Bank in the Queensland heat.
Location-wise, this is where it gets interesting. You’re basically a three-minute walk to Queen Street Mall if you need to do damage to your credit card, but you’re also close enough to the Botanic Gardens that you can actually escape the city buzz when it gets overwhelming. The Eagle Street Pier restaurant strip is right there too – though honestly, some of those places are tourist traps, so ask the front desk for their actual recommendations, not just the glossy brochures. What I really appreciated was how easy it is to hop on the CityCat from North Quay terminal; it’s literally across the street, so getting to places like West End or even out to the University of Queensland is dead simple.
The staff seems to genuinely know Brisbane rather than just parroting TripAdvisor highlights, which makes a difference when you’re trying to figure out whether it’s worth trekking to Mount Coot-tha or if you should just stick to the river precinct. Parking exists but it’ll cost you – this is Brisbane CBD after all – though the hotel’s location means you can honestly walk or public transport to most things you’d want to see. Check-in was smooth, none of that “your room isn’t ready but you can store your bags” nonsense, and the elevators are quick enough that you’re not standing there forever with your luggage.
The 8.4 rating makes sense once you’ve stayed here – it’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town, but it gets the fundamentals right while actually having some personality. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the whole place just feels… clean? Like, properly clean, not just “we sprayed some Febreze and called it good.” That matters more than you’d think, especially these days.
