Unique Character Queenslander Home! Just Minutes to CBD & South Brisbane
You know what caught me off guard about this place?
You know what caught me off guard about this place? It’s actually a proper Queenslander house – not some corporate hotel trying to fake local charm. I mean, when you roll up to 35 Hawthorne Street, you’re looking at one of those classic wooden houses with the wraparound verandah and character details that Brisbane does so well. The whole street has this lovely residential feel, but you’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Gabba if there’s a cricket match on, and honestly, the CBD is right there across the river.
The location is sort of brilliant in that sneaky way where you feel like you’ve discovered something. Woolloongabba isn’t touristy at all – it’s where actual Brisbane people live and work. You’ve got the PA Hospital just down the road, and there’s this great little strip of cafes and shops along Logan Road that most visitors never find. The house itself sits on a quiet residential street, so you’re not dealing with traffic noise, but walk five minutes and you’re at the Buranda train station or catching a bus into the city. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven around Brisbane’s inner suburbs will tell you is not always a given.
What really gets me is how they’ve kept all the original character – the polished timber floors, the high ceilings, those old-school windows that actually open properly for cross-ventilation. It feels like staying at a friend’s place rather than a hotel, if your friend happened to have impeccable taste and a house that’s been lovingly maintained. The rooms are spacious in that way old houses are, with proper storage and windows that look out onto leafy streets instead of concrete walls. I stayed during a typically muggy Brisbane summer, and the whole place stays surprisingly cool with the fans and natural airflow – you know how these old houses were designed for the climate before air conditioning became standard.
The 9.5 rating honestly makes sense once you’re there. It’s not fancy in a five-star hotel way, but it’s thoughtfully done and genuinely comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped if you want to grab groceries from the Coles at Stones Corner, and there’s something really nice about having coffee on the verandah in the morning instead of in some sterile hotel lobby. The hosts clearly know what they’re doing – check-in was smooth, everything was spotless, and they’d left local recommendations that were actually useful rather than just tourist traps.
If you’re the type who wants to experience Brisbane like someone who lives here rather than just hitting the obvious spots, this place nails it. You’re close enough to South Bank and the city that you can walk or take a quick bus ride, but you’re staying in a real neighborhood where you might chat with locals at the corner shop or stumble onto a great little restaurant that’s not in any guidebook. It’s particularly perfect if you’re in town for something at the hospital, or if you want to explore the southside without being stuck in the tourist bubble of the CBD.
