Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of Brisbane hotels, but The Gatsby Escape on level 71 of the Skytower actually caught me off guard – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. First thing you notice walking in isn’t the lobby (because there really isn’t one in the traditional sense), but the fact that you’re essentially checking into someone’s ridiculously well-appointed apartment that happens to be suspended 71 floors above Margaret Street. The elevator ride up gives you time to wonder what you’ve gotten yourself into, then those doors open and – well, let’s just say the view hits you before anything else does.

What I love about this place is how it manages to feel both fancy and livable at the same time. The apartment itself has this Art Deco thing going on that actually works without feeling like a theme park, and the kitchen is proper functional – I mean, you could actually cook here if you wanted to, though honestly with Eagle Street Pier just down the hill, why would you? The bedroom overlooks the river, and I spent way too much time just watching the CityCats puttering back and forth below. You know what’s weird though? It’s incredibly quiet up there. I was expecting city noise, but at that height, Brisbane just sort of… hums quietly beneath you. The building itself is solid too – no creaking or weird elevator sounds at 3am like you get in some of these converted towers.

Practically speaking, parking is sorted (they validate at the tower garage, which is a relief because street parking around Margaret Street is basically a blood sport), and the whole check-in process is surprisingly smooth for what’s essentially a high-end Airbnb situation. The location really is perfect if you know Brisbane – you’re literally a five-minute walk from Queen Street Mall, but far enough from the Friday night chaos that you won’t hear drunk backpackers at 2am. Winter mornings up there are something else entirely – watching the fog roll off the river while you’re having coffee feels almost unfair to everyone else stuck at ground level. I mean, sure, it’s not cheap, and if you’re scared of heights this obviously isn’t your place, but for a special occasion or if you just want to feel like you’re living in some alternate universe version of Brisbane where you’re secretly wealthy, it’s pretty hard to beat. The 8.8 rating makes sense once you’re up there – it’s the kind of place that makes you take photos you’ll actually want to show people later.
