Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Sunnybank Hotel on McCullough Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes those assumptions bite you in the ass, and this was one of those times. The building itself is pretty standard – nothing flashy, just clean lines and that sort of practical Australian hotel vibe you see everywhere. But once you’re inside, there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole operation that I actually found myself appreciating.
The thing about staying in Sunnybank is that you’re right in the heart of Brisbane’s Asian quarter, which means you’re literally walking distance from some of the best pho and dumpling joints in the city. I mean, forget about the tourist traps in the CBD – you’ve got Market Square right around the corner where locals actually eat, and the smell of fresh baozi drifts up from the street level bakeries in the morning. The hotel staff seemed to get this too; they had these little maps with handwritten notes about which restaurants stay open late and where to grab decent coffee (apparently the place two blocks down does a killer flat white, though I can’t remember the name). Parking was surprisingly painless – there’s a covered spot situation that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, which honestly impressed me more than it should have.
What really sold me on this place was the practical stuff that matters when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms are clean without being sterile, the air conditioning works properly (crucial in Brisbane summers), and the walls are thick enough that you’re not listening to your neighbor’s TV all night. I stayed on the third floor and it was genuinely quiet, even though you’re on a fairly busy street. The whole building has this sort of lived-in feeling – not worn down, just comfortable, like someone’s put thought into making it work for people who aren’t just passing through. Check-in was smooth, no weird policies about holding your credit card hostage, and they actually knew answers to questions about getting around the city without just handing you a generic tourist brochure. Is it fancy? No. But it’s solid, reasonably priced, and puts you in one of Brisbane’s most interesting neighborhoods where you can eat incredibly well without breaking the bank. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

What Our Guests Say
An affordable no nonsense place to stay Affordable and comfortable
What could be improved: Feels a bit run down
It suited our trip agenda very well & was very economical Location was great with shops & eating a short walk away
What could be improved: No iron or ironing board in the room. Only 1 key available for a family which made fogNov to different places very difficult.
It was ok Comfortable bed and close to everything i needed
What could be improved: Bright lights at night outside shining through windows.
Superb Great location, Late check-in was helpful!
Great for what I needed Very clean, great location for what I needed
What could be improved: Very outdated and needs repairs
Thank you for the good service, we would love to go back next time. I like the entire place 😁.
What could be improved: The reception was a bit hard to find when it was my first time coming. Also, in the 19th room there is a microwave that is really hard to use because it didn't work properly. The microwave didn't make the food warm but the number was still calculated like it was.
The rest of that is perfect.
I loved the comfort of the bed and a great central spot to travel into town Bed very comfortable great service at pub for dinner
What could be improved: Bathroom looked old pieces missing off wall it looked tired
Thank you to Erica and housekeeping staff very much appreciated Staff were great room clean and serviced daily.
What could be improved: Not applicable
value for money, great meal, friendly staff, need a sign on the main road for non-locals to find it. Checkin was quick and easy since it was prebooked. Room was quite adequate for our stay. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The meal we had in the hotel were very good, quickly served( more quickly than I had expected actually) and sufficient.
Good value for money. Nice decor and big sports screens for those into that! Recommended
What could be improved: we did drive past the entrance as we missed any obvious signage. That would have been helpful. Room did have a strange odour (cleaning chemicals according to my partner but soon dissipated.Got caught out by the two doors as we drove to the wrong park area, not sure why two doors(it doesnt open anyway) but got it soon enough.
Great location and staff, but the room felt outdated with some minor inconveniences. We liked the location and the Sunnybank Hotel Restaurant next door. Aircon was good. Room was neat and tidy. Staff were lovely. Price was okay for Brisbane accomodation.
What could be improved: The furniture in the room was old and some parts were peeling away. The room itself seemed out of date (popcorn ceiling). I could still feel floor cleaner under my feet when I had a shower which made it a bit slippery once wet. No jug of water in fridge to fill the kettle up when wanting a cup of coffee in the morning - did not want to use the bathroom tap. Also the biggest issue was the glare from the top window - why no curtain or blind?
