So I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Sub Penthouse” in the name, I was expecting something pretentious, but this place on Leichhardt Street actually delivers without the attitude. You’re basically getting a proper two-bedroom apartment that feels like someone’s stylish home rather than a sterile hotel room, which is exactly what you want when you’re staying in Spring Hill for more than a night or two.

The location is one of those Spring Hill spots that locals know but tourists often miss – you’re literally a five-minute walk down the hill to the city center, but far enough up that you escape most of the weekend noise from the Valley. I mean, you can still hear the occasional taxi honking on Gregory Terrace, but it’s nothing like being right in the thick of things. What really sold me was the space itself though. The bedrooms are actually separate rooms (shocking, I know, but you’d be surprised how many “two-bedroom” places in Brisbane are just creative partitioning), and the living area has these big windows that let in heaps of natural light during the day. The kitchen is fully kitted out too – not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation, but actual counter space and decent appliances. Perfect if you want to grab fresh stuff from the markets and cook instead of eating out every meal.

You know what’s funny? The building itself looks pretty standard from the street – nothing fancy – but once you’re inside, it’s clear someone put thought into the details. The floors don’t creak when you walk around at night, there’s proper air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a freight train, and honestly, the shower pressure is better than most hotels I’ve stayed at in the city. Parking can be a bit tricky in Spring Hill generally, but there’s a spot included which saves you the headache of circling the block. The whole area gets pretty quiet after 9 PM on weekdays, which is great if you’re the type who needs proper sleep, but weekends can get a bit livelier with people heading to or from the city. If you’re planning to explore Brisbane properly, this is actually a smart base – you can walk to Roma Street for trains, the Botanical Gardens are right there, and you’re close enough to South Bank that you don’t need to think twice about heading over for dinner. It’s one of those places where you remember why you liked Brisbane in the first place.
