Somewhere To Stay Backpackers
Somewhere To Stay Backpackers
You know what?
You know what? I’ve walked past Somewhere To Stay Backpackers on Brighton Road probably a dozen times before I actually stayed there, and honestly, I wish I’d checked it out sooner. It’s one of those places that doesn’t scream for attention from the street β just a solid brick building tucked between a Thai restaurant and a vintage clothing shop β but once you’re inside, it actually has this surprisingly welcoming vibe that a lot of the flashier hostels in the city center are missing.
The thing about this place is that it gets the balance right between social and chill. I mean, you’ve got your common areas where people are hanging out, sharing travel stories, maybe planning their next move up the coast, but it’s not one of those party hostels where you can’t get any sleep because someone’s blasting music until 3 AM. The rooms are clean β really clean, actually β and the beds are way more comfortable than you’d expect for the price point. I stayed in a six-bed dorm and while it was full, everyone was pretty respectful about noise levels. The lockers are decent size too, which is always a relief when you’re trying to cram everything you own into a backpack.
What really sold me on the place though was the location. Brighton Road might not sound familiar if you’re not from Brisbane, but it’s actually perfectly positioned β you’re about a fifteen-minute walk to South Bank (where all the good riverside stuff happens), and there’s a bus stop literally two minutes down the road that’ll get you into the CBD in no time. The staff mentioned that a lot of people use it as a base for exploring the Gold Coast too, which makes sense since you’re not fighting through the Valley traffic to get to the highway. Plus, there’s this little coffee shop called Beans & Leaves just around the corner that does proper flat whites for under five bucks β the kind of local spot you stumble across and then become slightly obsessed with. The whole neighborhood has this laid-back, slightly artsy feel that’s way more authentic than the touristy areas closer to the river.
I’ll be honest, it’s not perfect β the WiFi can be a bit patchy in some rooms, and the kitchen gets pretty crowded during dinner time when everyone’s trying to cook their two-minute noodles at once. But the shower pressure is excellent (seriously, this matters more than you think), and they’ve got this outdoor area where you can actually sit and plan your next move without feeling like you’re in a hostel assembly line. The 7.8 rating makes sense to me β it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Brisbane, but it delivers on what backpackers actually need: clean beds, good location, friendly atmosphere, and staff who know the city well enough to give you proper recommendations instead of just pointing you toward the obvious tourist traps.

What Our Guests Say
I was attending a conference at Queensland University in Grey Street with my 20 year old daughter. I'm 61 and we are both full time students. We needed somewhere to stay that had excellent wifi was near to the University and affordable. Wifi was very good and its excellent value for money.. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be back. The room size was great. We had our own toilet and shower. I asked for a quiet room and they gave us room 53 at the back. It's a lovely vibrant vibe with very friendly staff and guests. Well organized and a very comfortable bed. They provided pancakes breakfast days but we didn't get a chance to eat any because of our early start. It was hot when we were there. We Ubered to the uni for around $10. There was some noise of people talking and having fun at night which was good and it made us feel safe. 10pm everything died down. It's a great place to stayπ
The staff were very friendly and gave lots of tips on places to go etc. The hostel was well planned out. My en suite room had a fridge which i didn't expect, bed was very comfortable. Hostel was a15-20 minute walk from the South Bank beach area and 5 minutes from shops and restaurants. The staff put on events most days. Had free crepes for breakfast then a bbq for Australia day.
The facilities on the whole were pretty good - spacious kitchen and laundry room. I liked how there was a separate female shower room and toilet. The staff were also very friendly and helpful.
Comfortable beds, good location, friendly staff, huge kitchen,
Great hostel which is well run and caters for backpackers. The rooms are basic but very clean. There are plenty of bathrooms for all the guests and great kitchen facilities. We stayed one night and the place was quiet after about 10.30pm. I would not recommend this for families or those who like a few home comforts but if cheap, simple and clean is what youβre after, this place is great!
Kitchen was great and the staff were very, very helpful.
Location and staff was friendly
The hostel was very basic, but it was clean and had everything we needed. The kitchen was big with plenty of space to be able to cook.
Lovely city views outside the window beside my upper bunk bed in the 8-mixed dorm on the second floor. Close to convenient stores, Coles, Aldi, Southbank parklands, bus stops and train stations.
It's a big place with a table tennis table, a swimming pool, a clothesline, a kitchen and many outdoor chairs and tables.
The backpackers provided many free festival activities including Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas BBQ. Amazing hospitality.
