Madison Tower Mill Hotel
Madison Tower Mill Hotel
You know what?
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Madison Tower Mill Hotel on Wickham Terrace – honestly, the name makes it sound like some corporate chain thing. But this place actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked into Spring Hill in this spot where you’re close enough to the city that you can literally walk down to the Queen Street Mall (though it’s a bit of a trek back up those hills, fair warning), but you’re also in this quieter residential area that feels more like the real Brisbane.
The building itself has this interesting mix going on – part of it feels like they’ve kept some of the original character (I’m guessing it really was connected to some old mill operation), while other sections are clearly updated. My room was on the seventh floor, and honestly, the view over the city was way better than I expected from a 3.5-star place. You can see the river winding through the city, and if you’re lucky enough to get a room facing the right direction, the Story Bridge looks pretty spectacular at sunset. The rooms aren’t huge – I mean, this is inner Brisbane, so you’re not getting sprawling suites – but they’re thoughtfully laid out. The bed was actually comfortable (you know how hotel beds can be a total lottery), and the bathroom was recently renovated with decent water pressure, which matters more than people think.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the area inside and out. The front desk guy told me about this great Vietnamese place on Boundary Street that I never would have found otherwise, and when I mentioned I needed to get to South Bank for a meeting, he suggested taking the bus from right outside rather than dealing with parking downtown – saved me probably thirty bucks and a lot of stress. The neighborhood itself is pretty cool too. You’ve got the Spring Hill Baths just a few minutes walk away if you’re into that whole historic pool scene, and Roma Street Parkland is close enough for a morning jog. There’s a bit of street noise in the evenings, especially on weekends when people are heading out in the Valley, but nothing that kept me awake. One thing to note – parking is available but it’s paid, which seems to be the norm around here. All in all, it’s one of those places that doesn’t try to oversell itself but delivers on what actually matters: clean rooms, helpful staff, and a location that lets you experience Brisbane like someone who actually lives here rather than just passing through.
