Honestly, when I first walked into this penthouse at the Ridge Motel on Leichhardt Street, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s technically a motel, right? But wow, was I wrong. This place is actually a proper two-story sky home that sits on top of what’s otherwise a pretty standard accommodation building in Spring Hill. The moment you step inside, you realize you’re in something special. The space is massive – three proper bedrooms spread across two levels, and the views… well, let’s just say you can see across Brisbane’s skyline in a way that makes you feel like you’re floating above the city.

What really got me was how they’ve designed the upper level. The main living area has these floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light, and honestly, during golden hour, the whole place just glows. The kitchen is actually functional too – not one of those hotel kitchenettes where you can barely make toast. I mean, you could cook a proper dinner here if you wanted to. The bedrooms are well thought out, with the master upstairs having its own little balcony area where you can have your coffee in the morning without disturbing anyone else. Spring Hill itself is this interesting mix of residential and commercial – you’re close enough to the CBD that you can walk to Queen Street Mall in about 15 minutes, but far enough out that it doesn’t feel like you’re sleeping in the middle of tourist central.

The Ridge Motel building itself is set back from the main road, so you don’t get that constant traffic noise that plagues a lot of inner-city accommodations. The whole Spring Hill area has this cool village-ish feel during the day, with little cafes and local shops scattered around, but you’re still walking distance from Roma Street Station if you need to get anywhere quickly. I stayed here during a particularly busy conference week in the city, and while everywhere else was packed and overpriced, this felt like a secret hideaway that somehow nobody else knew about. The 9.8 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be a fancy hotel with all the bells and whistles, but it absolutely nails what it is: a comfortable, spacious home base that happens to have killer views and a location that puts you right in the sweet spot of Brisbane living.
