Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of hotels in Brisbane, and honestly, the Novotel South Bank hits that sweet spot where you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth without breaking the bank. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this immediate sense that they’ve actually thought about the details – the lighting’s warm, not that harsh fluorescent stuff, and the staff at check-in genuinely seem to know what they’re doing rather than just going through the motions.

What really won me over, though, is how they’ve positioned themselves in South Bank. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the lagoon and parklands, which is perfect if you’re traveling with kids or just want to escape the city buzz without actually leaving the city. The rooms themselves are what I’d call “thoughtfully modern” – they’ve got that contemporary hotel look but with enough personality that you don’t feel like you’re sleeping in a generic box. The beds are actually comfortable (and I’m picky about mattresses), plus the blackout curtains do their job if you’re dealing with jet lag or just want to sleep in. One thing I really appreciated was the decent-sized desk area – if you need to get some work done or just spread out your stuff, there’s space for it.

The location thing is huge here, and not just because it sounds good on paper. You’re close enough to the CBD that you can easily walk across the Victoria Bridge if you want, but far enough from Queen Street that you’re not dealing with the weekend party crowd stumbling around at 2 AM. The restaurant downstairs is solid – nothing groundbreaking, but they do a proper breakfast and the coffee’s better than most hotel coffee (which, let’s be honest, isn’t saying much, but still). Parking can be a bit pricey, but that’s Brisbane for you, and at least they have valet service so you don’t have to deal with the nightmare of finding a spot yourself. The pool area’s nice too, though it gets busy during school holidays – just something to keep in mind if you’re planning a quiet swim. Overall, it’s one of those places that delivers on what it promises without any nasty surprises, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re traveling.
