So, I've stayed at the Mercure Brisbane Garden City a few times now, and honestly, it's one of those places that grows on you.
So, I’ve stayed at the Mercure Brisbane Garden City a few times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that grows on you. First impression? It’s tucked away on Macgregor Street in Upper Mount Gravatt, which sounds way more remote than it actually is. You’re about 15 minutes from the city center, but here’s the thing – you’re also right next to the Garden City Shopping Centre, which is massive and has pretty much everything you’d need. I mean, there’s a Woolworths literally across the street, plus all those restaurants and cafes. The hotel itself has this sort of modern corporate vibe, but not in a sterile way – more like they actually thought about making business travelers comfortable.
What really surprised me was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re so close to a major shopping hub. The rooms are properly soundproofed, which you don’t always get with 4-star places. The beds are actually decent – not too soft, not too firm – and the air conditioning works well (crucial for Brisbane summers, trust me). Parking is free, which is a massive win because paid parking in Brisbane can absolutely kill your budget. The staff at reception are genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. Last time I was there, the guy at the front desk gave me specific directions to avoid the roadworks on Logan Road, which saved me about 20 minutes of sitting in traffic.
You know what I really appreciate about this place? It’s honest about what it is. It’s not trying to be some fancy boutique hotel with overpriced cocktails and pretentious art installations. It’s a solid, reliable spot that does the basics really well. The breakfast is decent – nothing spectacular, but fresh and filling. The pool area is small but clean, and there’s usually nobody there during weekdays, which is perfect if you want to actually swim some laps. The location works brilliantly if you’re visiting family in the southern suburbs or if you’ve got business around the uni area – Griffith University is just down the road. Plus, you’re close to the M1 if you need to head to the Gold Coast, but far enough from the highway that you don’t hear truck noise all night. The 7.6 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it won’t disappoint either. For the price point, especially during the week, it’s actually really good value compared to staying in the city center where you’d pay twice as much for a smaller room.
