So I've stayed at Mantra on Mary a few times now, and honestly, it's one of those places that grows on you.
So I’ve stayed at Mantra on Mary a few times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that grows on you. The first thing you notice when you walk in is how the lobby feels sort of corporate-sleek but not intimidating – you know what I mean? It’s got that modern Australian hotel vibe going on, all clean lines and neutral tones, but there’s something warm about it too.
The location is actually brilliant if you know Brisbane at all. Mary Street puts you right in the thick of the CBD without being on one of those crazy busy thoroughfares like Queen Street. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Queen Street Mall (which, let’s be honest, you’ll probably end up at whether you want to or not), and Eagle Street Pier is just down the hill if you’re after decent riverside dining. What I really love though is that you can walk to South Bank in about fifteen minutes – I mean, you could catch the CityCat, but the walk along the river is pretty nice, especially in the evening when the city lights start reflecting off the water.
The rooms themselves are… well, they’re solid. Nothing that’ll blow your mind, but everything works and it’s clean. The beds are actually quite comfortable – I’m picky about that stuff – and the air conditioning is decent, which matters more than you’d think during Brisbane’s sticky summers. The bathrooms are a good size, though I’ve noticed the water pressure can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on which floor you’re on. One thing that surprised me was how quiet it is at night, considering you’re smack dab in the middle of the city. I mean, you’ll hear the occasional Friday night reveler, but it’s not like some places where you’re listening to traffic all night long.
Here’s the thing about Mantra properties – they’re consistent, and this one’s no exception. Check-in is usually pretty smooth, the staff know what they’re doing, and you’re not going to run into any major surprises. It’s got that reliable, mid-range business hotel feel that works whether you’re there for work or just exploring Brisbane. The fitness center is small but functional, and there’s a decent-sized pool area that actually gets some sun during the day.
I wouldn’t call it a destination hotel or anything like that, but it does what it promises to do. The 7.2 rating seems about right – it’s above average without being exceptional. You’re paying for the location more than anything else, and in Brisbane’s CBD, that location is worth quite a bit. If you’re the type who wants to be able to walk everywhere and doesn’t need a resort-style experience, you’ll probably be pretty happy here. Plus, parking in the CBD is expensive no matter where you go, so having it sorted at the hotel (even if it costs extra) takes one headache away.
