Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Airport Ascot Motel on Kingsford Smith Drive, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, it’s literally called a motel, right? But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. The building itself has this clean, modern vibe that’s way more polished than what you’d typically expect from somewhere with “motel” in the name. You know what really got me though? The staff at check-in were genuinely friendly – not that forced hospitality thing you get sometimes, but actual human beings who seemed happy to help.
The location is honestly pretty clever if you think about it. Yeah, you’re on Kingsford Smith Drive which can get busy during peak hours, but that also means you’re literally minutes from the airport without being stuck in some industrial wasteland. Hamilton’s got this interesting mix of old Brisbane charm and newer developments, and you can actually walk down to the river if you want to stretch your legs after a long flight. The rooms themselves are solid – nothing fancy, but everything works properly (and trust me, after staying in places where the shower barely trickles or the air con sounds like a jet engine, you appreciate the basics being done right). I was worried about noise from the road, but the windows are decent quality and once you’re inside with the door closed, it’s surprisingly quiet. The beds are actually comfortable too – firm but not like sleeping on concrete, which seems to be the default at a lot of budget places.
What really sets this place apart though is that it punches above its weight for a 4-star rating. The little details matter here – the WiFi actually works at a decent speed, there’s proper parking right outside your room (which is gold when you’re dealing with luggage), and the whole place feels clean without that overwhelming chemical smell some motels have. I stayed here during a weekday and it was pretty peaceful, though I imagine it gets busier on weekends with people using it as a base to explore Brisbane proper. The thing is, if you’re flying in or out of Brisbane and need somewhere reliable without paying city hotel prices, this spot makes a lot of sense. It’s not trying to be something it’s not – just a well-run, comfortable place to crash that happens to be run by people who actually care about doing their job properly. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
