Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Airway Motel on Lamington Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much. The name sounds like something from the 1970s, and well, parts of it probably are. But you know what? Sometimes these unassuming places surprise you, and this one actually grew on me during my stay.
The location is what really makes this place work. Ascot’s one of those Brisbane suburbs that’s close enough to everything without being right in the thick of it – you’re maybe ten minutes from the airport (hence the name, I’m guessing), and Eagle Farm Racecourse is practically around the corner if you’re into that scene. The motel sits on a quiet stretch where you won’t get much street noise, though you’ll definitely hear planes overhead during the day. Honestly, it becomes white noise after a while, and if you’re someone who needs absolute silence, well… maybe pick somewhere else. Parking’s easy – there’s space right in front of your room, which is actually pretty convenient when you’re hauling luggage around.
The rooms themselves are clean and functional, though don’t expect Instagram-worthy interiors. It’s got that classic motel vibe with the exterior walkways and doors facing the parking area. My room was larger than I expected, with a decent-sized bed and a little sitting area that I ended up using more than I thought I would. The air conditioning works well (crucial for Brisbane summers), and the shower has good pressure – sometimes it’s the simple things that matter most when you’re traveling. The décor is, I mean, it’s fine. Nothing fancy, but everything works and feels recently maintained. There’s free Wi-Fi that actually connects properly, which honestly puts it ahead of some fancier places I’ve stayed.
What impressed me most was how genuinely helpful the staff were. The woman at check-in gave me solid recommendations for nearby restaurants – she pointed me toward this little Vietnamese place about five minutes away that I never would have found otherwise. And when I needed directions to the Royal Brisbane Hospital (visiting a friend), she actually drew me a little map showing the back roads to avoid traffic. That kind of local knowledge you just can’t get from chain hotels.
The 3.5-star rating feels about right – it’s not luxury, but it’s well above basic accommodation. For the price point, you’re getting honest value without any pretense. If you need somewhere clean, quiet-ish, and well-located for exploring Brisbane’s northern suburbs or catching an early flight, this place does the job. Just don’t expect a day spa or room service – this is straightforward accommodation done properly, which is sometimes exactly what you want.

Was a nice clean basic hotel. Good to stay for a night or 2 if you are going on a cruise, would not stay there for a week ro 2, but I'd be happy to rebook there in the future.
