Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first walked into the Luxury Meriton Suites Retreat on Herschel Street, I wasn’t expecting miracles from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes it’s the hotels that don’t try too hard to impress that end up being the most comfortable. This place sits right in the thick of Brisbane’s CBD, which means you’re literally a five-minute walk from Queen Street Mall and all that chaos, but somehow they’ve managed to keep things surprisingly quiet inside.
The suites themselves are actually proper suites, not just hotel rooms with a fancy name slapped on them. I mean, you’ve got separate living areas and kitchenettes that are genuinely useful – not those sad little coffee stations some places pass off as “kitchen facilities.” The furnishings are a bit dated (think early 2000s corporate apartment vibes), but everything’s clean and functional. What really impressed me was how they’ve soundproofed the place – considering you’re surrounded by the usual city noise and construction that never seems to stop around the CBD, you can actually sleep through the night without earplugs. The air conditioning works properly too, which honestly is half the battle in Brisbane’s humidity.
Here’s the thing about the location that most people don’t realize until they’re here – Herschel Street is perfectly positioned between the business district and South Bank. You can walk to the Wheel of Brisbane in about fifteen minutes, or catch the CityCat from Eagle Street Pier without dealing with traffic. The hotel doesn’t have its own parking (welcome to the CBD), but there’s a decent-sized public garage two blocks over on Charlotte Street that won’t completely destroy your budget. Staff-wise, they’re pretty straightforward – no over-the-top hospitality theater, just competent people who know the city well enough to give you actual directions instead of vague gestures. The 7.2 rating makes sense to me; it’s not going to blow you away, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any nasty surprises. If you’re the type who needs a rooftop infinity pool and marble everything, look elsewhere. But if you want a genuine apartment-style stay in the heart of Brisbane where you can spread out, cook your own breakfast, and not feel like you’re living in a hotel bubble, this place actually gets it right.
