You know what caught me off guard about Fleet Lane Apartments? It’s actually tucked away on Hope Street in South Brisbane, which honestly feels like you’re staying in a real neighborhood rather than some sterile hotel district. I mean, South Brisbane has this interesting mix going on – you’ve got the cultural precinct with QPAC and the State Library just across the river, but then you’re also walking distance to some genuinely good coffee spots that the locals haven’t abandoned yet.
The apartments themselves are pretty solid for a 4-star place, though I’ll be straight with you – that 7.1 rating feels about right. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it gets the job done well. The thing I appreciated most was actually having proper kitchen facilities (not just a sad mini-fridge and kettle situation), which meant I could grab fresh stuff from the weekend markets at South Bank and actually cook something decent. The apartments feel lived-in rather than hotel-sterile, if that makes sense – some might call it dated, but I found it kind of refreshing after staying in too many places that look like they were designed by the same person with a serious beige obsession.
What really works about this spot is the location without the tourist trap pricing. You’re literally a ten-minute walk to the Goodwill Bridge, which gets you into the CBD without dealing with traffic or paying ridiculous parking fees. And honestly, South Brisbane has been quietly getting better over the past few years – there’s this little strip of restaurants along Grey Street that most visitors completely miss because they’re too busy hitting up the obvious spots in the city. The area does get a bit quiet after business hours (it’s not exactly party central), but if you’re looking for somewhere to actually sleep rather than stumble home to, that’s actually a plus. Just heads up though – if you’re driving, parking can be a bit of a puzzle during weekdays when all the office workers are around, but weekends are pretty cruisy. The staff were straightforward and helpful without being overly chatty, which I appreciated after a long day of playing tourist.
