You know what caught me off guard about this place on Ann Street? It’s actually quieter than you’d expect for being right in the thick of Newstead. I mean, you’re literally a stone’s throw from all the trendy cafes and that whole Gasworks precinct thing, but once you’re inside, it feels surprisingly peaceful – maybe it’s how the building sits back from the street, or maybe I just got lucky with my timing.

The apartment itself is honestly pretty solid for what you’re paying. Two proper bedrooms, which is rare in Brisbane without breaking the bank, and both bathrooms are done up nicely – not fancy, but you won’t be complaining about the shower pressure or anything like that. The kitchen’s got everything you actually need if you’re planning to cook (and honestly, with James Street just around the corner, you’ll probably end up grabbing dinner out most nights anyway). What I really appreciated was the little touches – decent coffee machine, proper wine glasses, that kind of stuff that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere someone actually lives rather than a sterile hotel room.

The park situation is legit, by the way. You’ve got that green space right there, which is perfect if you’re traveling with kids or just need somewhere to go for a morning run without dodging traffic. And speaking of getting around – look, parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this area, but they’ve sorted that out for you, which honestly saves so much hassle. I’ve stayed in places around here before where you’re circling blocks looking for a spot, so that alone is worth mentioning. The whole Newstead area has really come into its own over the past few years, and this place puts you right in the middle of it without the chaos of being too close to the Valley. You can walk to Powerhouse easily, catch the CityCat if you need to get into the city proper, and there’s actually decent coffee within stumbling distance – that little place on Commercial Road does a proper flat white if you’re picky about these things. The 8.3 rating makes sense when you add it all up – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it ticks all the boxes you actually care about when you’re trying to get a feel for Brisbane beyond the tourist strip.
