You know what struck me first about this place on End Street? It’s actually a proper house – not some cramped apartment trying to pass itself off as “family friendly.” I mean, six bedrooms in Highgate Hill is pretty impressive when you consider most Brisbane accommodations squeeze families into two rooms and call it a day.

The location is honestly brilliant if you know Brisbane at all. Highgate Hill sits right between the city and South Brisbane, so you’re walking distance to South Bank (maybe 15 minutes if you don’t mind the hill), but you’re also close enough to catch the bus into the CBD without the tourist crowds. The street itself is residential and quiet – I stayed there during school holidays and barely heard any traffic, which is rare for inner Brisbane. There’s this little corner store about two blocks down that saved us multiple times when we ran out of coffee, and the local park where kids can actually run around is just up the road.

What really works about this house is the space – you can spread out without everyone getting on each other’s nerves. The kitchen is big enough that adults can cook while kids do homework at the dining table, and there are enough bathrooms that you’re not queuing every morning. The bedrooms are comfortable sizes too, not those tiny boxes where you can barely open a suitcase. I particularly liked that each room has decent storage space because let’s face it, with six bedrooms you’re probably traveling with enough stuff to fill a small warehouse. The whole place feels lived-in rather than sterile – there are books on shelves, local maps tucked into drawers, that sort of thing that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than a hotel showroom.

Parking is straightforward (crucial in Brisbane), and the check-in process was refreshingly simple – none of that awkward waiting around in lobbies. The house stays cool even in Brisbane’s summer heat, which honestly surprised me given how many older houses in the area turn into ovens. During the evenings, you can sit on the front porch and actually have a conversation without competing with traffic noise. The wifi works properly throughout the house too, which matters when you’ve got teenagers who act like they’re dying without internet access.
