Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Grand Chancellor on Leichhardt Street, I wasn’t expecting much. The exterior’s pretty standard corporate hotel stuff, you know? But then you walk into that lobby and it’s actually got some character to it. The staff behind the front desk seemed genuinely happy to be there, which is rarer than you’d think in Brisbane’s hotel scene.
What really sold me on this place was the location – and I mean the real location, not just “convenient to everything” nonsense. You’re literally a five-minute walk down to the Botanic Gardens, which honestly becomes your morning coffee spot if you’re smart about it. The whole Spring Hill area is sort of this perfect sweet spot where you’re close enough to the CBD that you can walk to Queen Street Mall (maybe 10-12 minutes if you don’t mind a bit of a stroll), but far enough away that you’re not dealing with all the weekend party chaos. I actually found myself walking to work in the valley most days because the path through the gardens is pretty lovely, especially in the morning before it gets too hot.
The rooms themselves are solid – not Instagram-worthy or anything, but they’ve got that lived-in comfort that makes you want to actually use the space instead of just sleeping there. The beds are proper firm, which my back appreciated after a few days of Brisbane exploring. What surprised me was how quiet it stays, even on weekends. I mean, you’re still in the city so there’s some ambient noise, but nothing like what you’d get closer to the nightlife areas. The air conditioning actually works (again, rarer than it should be), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. Oh, and the WiFi doesn’t make you want to throw your laptop out the window, which is basically a miracle for hotel internet.
Here’s the thing that really makes this place work – it feels like it’s run by people who actually stay in hotels themselves. Little things like having enough power outlets near the bed, blackout curtains that actually block light, and a shower with decent water pressure. The breakfast isn’t going to change your life, but it’s proper food and the coffee’s surprisingly good. I ended up chatting with one of the morning staff who gave me better restaurant recommendations than any guidebook I’d read.
If you’re the type who needs to be right in the thick of everything, this might feel a bit removed – though honestly, the 15-minute walk to Fortitude Valley isn’t exactly a hardship. But if you want somewhere that feels like a base camp rather than just a place to crash, where you can actually relax and the staff remember your name after a couple days, then yeah, this works really well. The 4.5 stars feel earned rather than inflated, if that makes sense. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, which in Brisbane’s hotel market is actually pretty refreshing.
