You know what struck me first about the Holiday Inn Express on Wharf Street?
You know what struck me first about the Holiday Inn Express on Wharf Street? The lobby actually feels like someone put thought into it – not that generic hotel chain vibe you expect. I mean, it’s still clearly a Holiday Inn Express, but there’s something about the way the light hits those floor-to-ceiling windows that makes the whole place feel more… Brisbane, if that makes sense.
The location is honestly pretty clever. Spring Hill isn’t exactly the CBD, but that’s actually a good thing – you’re far enough away from the Queen Street Mall chaos to get some decent sleep, but close enough that you can walk to the Botanic Gardens in about ten minutes. And here’s something most people don’t realize: you’re literally a five-minute walk from the train station at Central, which means you can get to the airport without dealing with Brisbane traffic (trust me on this one). The street itself can get a bit busy during rush hour, but by 8 PM it’s pretty quiet. I stayed in a room on the fifth floor facing away from Wharf Street and barely heard any traffic noise – though I can’t vouch for the rooms that face the main road.
The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a decent Holiday Inn Express, but with a few nice touches. The beds are actually comfortable – not just hotel-marketing comfortable, but genuinely good for sleep. Air conditioning works well, which matters more than you’d think in Brisbane’s humidity. The bathroom’s compact but well-designed, and honestly, the shower pressure is better than half the fancy hotels I’ve stayed at. What I really appreciated was the workspace setup – there’s a proper desk with enough power outlets, and the WiFi is fast enough for video calls (tested it during a work trip). The mini-fridge is small but adequate, and there’s a decent coffee machine, though if you’re picky about coffee, you’ll want to walk two blocks to the little café on Boundary Street that locals actually go to.
Staff-wise, check-in was smooth and the front desk folks seem to know the area well – they gave me specific directions to places instead of just pointing vaguely down the street. The breakfast is standard Holiday Inn Express fare, nothing fancy but fills you up before a day of exploring. One small thing that annoyed me: the elevators are a bit slow during busy times, but that’s pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.
For the price point and that 8.3 rating, it makes sense. You’re getting solid, reliable accommodation without paying CBD prices, and you’re positioned perfectly for both business stuff in the city and tourist activities. The Riverside Expressway is right there if you need to drive somewhere, and if you’re flying out early, being this close to Central Station is genuinely convenient – no 6 AM taxi stress. It’s the kind of place where everything just works without any drama, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to enjoy Brisbane rather than deal with hotel hassles.
