George Williams Hotel
So I stayed at the George Williams Hotel on George Street last month, and honestly, it's one of those places that grows on you.
So I stayed at the George Williams Hotel on George Street last month, and honestly, it’s one of those places that grows on you. First impression? Well, the lobby’s got this sort of heritage charm mixed with modern touches – nothing too fancy, but you can tell they’ve put thought into making it feel welcoming rather than corporate. The staff actually remembered my name by day two, which doesn’t happen often at bigger hotels.
Location-wise, you’re really in the thick of things here. I mean, you’re literally on George Street, so you’ve got Queen Street Mall just a few minutes’ walk away, and the botanical gardens are close enough that I’d grab coffee and wander over in the mornings. What I loved – and this might sound weird – is that despite being right in the CBD, my room on the fifth floor was surprisingly quiet. I was expecting traffic noise all night, but the windows must be decent quality because I slept better than I do at home. The rooms themselves are comfortable without being flashy – clean lines, good lighting, and the bed was actually firm enough to not leave me with a sore back. The bathroom’s compact but well-designed, though I’ll be honest, the shower pressure could be stronger.
You know what really won me over though? The little things. There’s this great Vietnamese place called Pho Pasteur literally around the corner that the concierge recommended – best bun bo hue I’ve had outside of Melbourne. And when I mentioned I needed to get to South Bank for a meeting, the front desk guy didn’t just say “take the bus” – he walked me outside and pointed out exactly which stop to use and warned me about the construction on Grey Street that was slowing things down. The hotel’s got this community feel that you don’t always get in the city center. I noticed a lot of repeat guests chatting with staff like old friends, which tells you something about the place. Sure, it’s not going to blow you away with luxury – the fitness center is pretty basic, and the breakfast is good but not Instagram-worthy – but for a solid four-star experience where people actually care about your stay, it delivers. Plus, parking’s available underneath if you’re driving, which saved me from the nightmare of finding street parking in the CBD. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to be central without paying those crazy riverside hotel prices.
