The Star Grand Brisbane
The Star Grand Brisbane
You know what caught me off guard about The Star Grand Brisbane?
You know what caught me off guard about The Star Grand Brisbane? I was expecting another generic high-rise hotel, but this place actually has character – and I mean that in the best way possible. Walking into the lobby on William Street, there’s this immediate sense that someone put real thought into the design. It’s polished without being stuffy, which honestly is harder to pull off than you’d think.
The location is pretty much perfect if you’re trying to get around Brisbane without dealing with a car. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the botanical gardens (which, let me tell you, is clutch when you need to escape the city buzz for a hot minute), and getting to South Bank is just a quick stroll across the Victoria Bridge. I loved that I could walk to Eagle Street Pier for dinner without having to figure out rideshare surge pricing. The Queen Street Mall is right there too, though fair warning – it gets pretty hectic on weekends.
What really sold me on this place was the attention to detail. The rooms are spacious – I mean actually spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious – and the beds are the kind where you sink in just enough without feeling like you’re being swallowed. The bathrooms have those rainfall showers that actually work (you’d be surprised how many hotels mess this up), and there’s decent water pressure even on higher floors. I was on the 15th floor and could see the river, which was a nice bonus I wasn’t expecting. The sound insulation is solid too – Brisbane CBD can get pretty lively, especially around the casino area, but I slept through the night without any issues.
Staff here seem to actually know the city, which is refreshing. When I asked about good coffee spots, the concierge didn’t just point me to the hotel café – he sent me to this little place on Charlotte Street that locals actually go to. Small thing, but it matters. Check-in was smooth, no weird upselling tactics, and they had my room ready even though I arrived a bit early.
The fitness center is legit if you’re into that – proper equipment, not just a treadmill shoved in a corner. The pool area is nice for cooling off, though it gets pretty busy during peak season (basically October through March). Parking is valet only, which runs about $35 a night, but honestly, if you’re staying in the CBD, you’re probably better off without a car anyway.
Here’s the thing – at 8.8 rating, you’re getting what you pay for, and the price point reflects that this is a proper five-star spot. It’s not cheap, but it’s not trying to be. If you want to be in the heart of Brisbane with easy access to everything – the river, the cultural precinct, good restaurants, even the airport train – this is one of those places where the location and quality actually justify the cost. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was in town for something important where I needed to know everything would just work.
