Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to City Star Lodge on Main Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3.5-star place. But you know what? Sometimes these mid-range spots surprise you, and this one actually gets it right in ways that matter. The building itself is pretty straightforward, nothing fancy, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it that I appreciated right away.
What really won me over was the location – I mean, you’re literally in Kangaroo Point, which puts you right across the river from Brisbane’s CBD with those killer views everyone talks about. The thing is, most people don’t realize how easy it is to walk to the Story Bridge from here (maybe 10 minutes if you’re not rushing), and honestly, that morning walk became my favorite part of staying there. The staff seemed to actually know their neighborhood too, which you’d be surprised how rare that is. When I asked about getting to South Bank, the front desk guy didn’t just point me toward a taxi – he explained the CityCat route and mentioned that weird little shortcut through the park that cuts off like 15 minutes of walking.
The rooms are clean and functional, though I’ll admit the AC unit makes this weird clicking sound that took me a night to get used to. But the beds are actually comfortable (firmer side, if that matters to you), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. What I really appreciated was the attention to small details – decent water pressure in the shower, blackout curtains that actually block light, and outlets positioned where you can actually reach them from the bed. The Wi-Fi worked fine for streaming, which honestly feels like a minor miracle sometimes. Parking was straightforward too, none of that stressful circling around narrow hotel driveways you get in some Brisbane spots. The whole check-in experience was smooth, maybe five minutes total, and they had my room ready even though I showed up earlier than expected on a Tuesday afternoon. That 8.2 rating makes sense once you spend a few days there – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it nails the basics and throws in enough thoughtful touches that you feel like someone actually cares about your stay rather than just processing you through the system.

Nice room, bed was comfortable, great location, friendly and helpful staff
Great place to stay for an event in the valley. Quiet and comfortable.
LOVED the staff! This is the 2nd time I have stayed here and its great! Great location if you are doing this near the city. Staff pointed out a few food places and omg did not disappoint. Bedding is comfortable, and room was clean. Loved the undercover locked parking available for in the city plus also street parking.
Clean, easy access. Decent size rooms
Great location for our event at The GABBA. Family room was spacious for our needs (2 adults and 2 adult children). Bathroom but cramped but still fine and clean.
Location
Reception helped with suggestions on the best place to see the fireworks on NYE. We even received a text on that afternoon reminding us not to lock ourselves out of our rooms, which was really considerate. Remarkably quiet room and we had quite low expectations for some reason, the rooms are recently refurbished, large, the hotel is central and within walking distance to South Bank. Highly recommend.
The beautiful gardens and lights near the pool. The amenities were fantastic, the guest kitchen was stocked perfectly and so easy to navigate. The room was very clean with yummy hand wash, body wash etc, the bed was very comfortable and the pool was clean and beautiful to swim in. Great for kids with a shallow end. The warm welcome we received was wonderful after a long day and communication was excellent. The car park underneath was so convenient. The location was perfect right near so many places to eat , parks and just a short drive to river and ferries. Would definitely stay again.
