You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Lancaster Court Motel on Ipswich Road – honestly, the name made me think it’d be one of those tired roadside places you’d only book in desperation. But here’s the thing: this little spot actually surprised me. The building itself is pretty standard motel fare, but there’s something refreshingly honest about the whole setup. The owners clearly know they’re not running the Hilton, and instead of pretending otherwise, they’ve focused on getting the basics really right. My room was spotless (I mean genuinely clean, not just “good enough” clean), the bed was way more comfortable than I expected, and the air conditioning worked perfectly – which, if you’ve spent any time in Brisbane during summer, you know is basically non-negotiable.

What really sold me on this place was the location, though I doubt most tourists realize how good it is. Sure, you’re in Annerley rather than the CBD, but that’s actually kind of brilliant if you know your way around. You’re literally five minutes from the train station, so getting into the city is dead easy, but you’re also right in the middle of some of Brisbane’s best under-the-radar food spots. There’s this Vietnamese place just down the road that does incredible pho, and honestly, half the reason I’d stay here again is for easy access to that. The Ipswich Road corridor gets a bit busy during peak hour – I won’t lie about that – but the rooms face away from the main drag, so road noise isn’t really an issue. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s tried to park in South Brisbane will appreciate.

The staff deserve a mention here because they’re genuinely helpful without being pushy. When I checked in, the guy at the desk gave me actual useful directions to places I wanted to go, not just generic tourist stuff. He knew I could walk to the train station but warned me about the construction work that was happening on one of the streets (saved me about ten minutes of confusion). Look, this isn’t a fancy place – there’s no pool, no restaurant, no marble lobby. But sometimes you just want somewhere clean and comfortable where you can crash after exploring the city, and Lancaster Court delivers on that front. The rooms are bigger than most city hotels, everything works properly, and you’re paying way less than you would for comparable quality closer to the river. If you’re the type of traveler who cares more about having a good base than impressive amenities, this place makes a lot of sense.
