Bulimba Guest House

You know what?

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Bulimba Guest House on Wordsworth Street – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet residential pocket that honestly feels more like you’re visiting someone’s stylish aunt than checking into a hotel. But that’s exactly what makes this place work so well.

The thing about Bulimba is that it’s got this laid-back, artsy vibe that most visitors to Brisbane completely miss because they’re all holed up in the CBD. This guest house really captures that – it’s got character in a way that feels authentic rather than forced. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in quality (I mean that in the best way), with wooden floors that creak just enough to remind you you’re in an actual house, not some sterile hotel block. The staff actually seem to know the neighborhood, too – they’ll point you toward the weekend markets at the Bulimba Memorial Park or tell you which café on Oxford Street does the best flat white, and they’re not just reading from some script.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. Wordsworth Street doesn’t get much through traffic, so you can actually sleep with the windows open if you want that Brisbane breeze. The parking situation is pretty straightforward too – there’s space on-site, which honestly saves you the headache of trying to figure out Brisbane’s street parking rules. During the day, you’re close enough to walk down to the river (it’s maybe a fifteen-minute stroll to the CityCat terminal), and if you’re into that whole foodie scene, Bulimba’s got some serious gems that the tourists haven’t discovered yet. The guest house feels like it’s part of the community rather than just dropped into it – you’ll see locals walking their dogs past the front garden in the morning, and there’s something really nice about that rhythm. Sure, it’s not going to blow you away with fancy amenities or anything, but sometimes you just want a place that feels real, you know? The kind of spot where you can leave your stuff and explore without worrying about whether you’re missing out on some resort experience. If you’re the type who’d rather discover Brisbane like someone who actually lives here instead of just checking off tourist boxes, this is probably your place.

The property had everything we needed for our short stay. Great outlook from the deck. Linens on the beds were so welcoming and comfy.

The location was perfect for visiting family in Bulimba. It was within walking distance of Oxford Street and ferries to the city. It was a great value stay. The host Mike was available for any queries and was quick to respond.

The location was excellent but not easy to access and no parking which was advised.
There was no washing machine/ dryer as mentioned and after travelling for a week was very disappointing.
It was pretty basic really and not what we were expecting.
The fan didn’t work but thank goodness the air conditioners did.

Quaint unit under a house, close to the city. Mike was very accommodating, from swapping out a faulty remote for the fan to letting us know he was available if anything went wrong with our stay. It was comfortable, clean, and cosy. The back verandah and hammock were also a big hit, and there was even a quirky antique drop-down floor safe....any safe crackers out there?

Lovely bedding, loved that there were books in the bedrooms and bedside lamps.
Lots of crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils with a nice big fridge, the microwave, toaster, kettle, and whole apartment was very clean.
In warmer weather it would have been lovely to sit on the deck with the city views.
It was easy to find, close to great eateries and easy access to Toowoomba and the Gold Coast which is where we needed to go.
