Brisbane 1960s Pool House – hosted bed and breakfast
You know what caught me off guard about this place?
You know what caught me off guard about this place? The moment I walked into Brisbane 1960s Pool House, I actually felt like I’d stumbled into someone’s stylish aunt’s place from the Mad Men era – and I mean that in the best possible way. Located on Oxley Avenue in what’s essentially a quiet residential pocket of Brisbane, this isn’t your typical hotel experience, and honestly, that’s exactly why it works so well.
The whole vibe here is unapologetically retro without feeling like a theme park. The owners have clearly put thought into every detail – from the period-appropriate furniture that actually looks comfortable (not just Instagram-worthy) to the way the morning light hits that gorgeous pool area. Speaking of the pool, it’s genuinely the centerpiece here, and you’ll probably find yourself gravitating toward it even if you’re not much of a swimmer. The breakfast situation is handled with that personal touch you only get at proper B&Bs – none of that sad continental buffet nonsense. They actually ask what you want and remember your coffee preferences, which sounds small but makes a huge difference when you’re trying to ease into your day.
What I really appreciated was how the location strikes this perfect balance between accessible and tucked away. You’re not dealing with the chaos of the city center, but you’re also not stranded in suburban nowhere. The street itself is pretty quiet – I mean, you’ll hear the occasional car, but it’s not like you’re camping next to a highway. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s dealt with Brisbane’s more central areas will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The hosts clearly know their stuff about the area and can point you toward spots that aren’t just the obvious tourist traps. I ended up at this fantastic little café about ten minutes away that I never would have found otherwise. The whole experience feels more like staying with knowledgeable friends than checking into accommodation, and with a 9.1 rating, it’s pretty clear other people are picking up on that same energy. If you’re looking for something with personality that doesn’t sacrifice comfort – and you appreciate good design that doesn’t try too hard – this place delivers in ways that surprised me.
