You know what struck me first about Arena Apartments? The location is honestly pretty clever – you’re technically in South Brisbane, which sounds like it might be far from everything, but you’re actually just a quick walk across the river from the CBD. I mean, you can literally see the city skyline from some of the apartments, and there’s something satisfying about watching the CityCat ferries chug along the Brisbane River while you’re having your morning coffee.
The building itself is solid 3-star territory – nothing fancy, but it does what it needs to do well. The apartments are properly set up for longer stays, which makes sense given the name. Each one has a decent kitchen (actually functional, not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation), and the living areas are spacious enough that you won’t feel cramped if you’re there for more than a few nights. The balconies are where it’s at though – even if you get one facing away from the river, you’ll catch glimpses of the Gabba cricket ground, which is pretty cool if you’re into that sort of thing. Speaking of the Gabba, fair warning that it gets absolutely mental around here during cricket season or when there’s a big AFL match on. The whole area transforms into this buzzing pre-game party zone, which is either fantastic or slightly overwhelming depending on your mood and whether you’re trying to sleep.
What I really appreciate is how the staff actually seem to know the neighborhood – they’ll point you toward the good coffee spots on Grey Street (and trust me, you’ll want to find those), or mention that the South Bank Parklands are just a 10-minute stroll away. The 7.6 rating feels about right honestly – it’s not going to blow you away with luxury touches, but everything works properly and the beds are comfortable enough. The parking situation is decent too, which matters more than you’d think in Brisbane. One thing that caught me off guard was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re so close to the action. The street noise dies down pretty well, though you’ll still hear the occasional taxi or late-night reveler. The whole South Brisbane area has this interesting mix of residential calm and urban energy – during the day you’ve got people heading to work in the city, but evenings feel more relaxed and local. If you’re the type who likes to explore on foot, you’ll love how walkable everything is from here. The river walk is gorgeous, especially at sunset, and you can easily wander over to South Bank for dinner or catch a show at QPAC without needing to figure out parking or public transport.
