You know what caught me off guard about this place?
You know what caught me off guard about this place? The absolute quiet. I mean, you’re technically still in the city – Brisbane’s CBD is maybe ten minutes away – but walking up to 23 Hobbs Street feels like stepping into one of those leafy neighborhoods where people actually know their neighbors’ names. The townhouse sits there all unassuming, and honestly, I almost walked past it thinking it was just another residential building. Which, in a way, is exactly the point.
The thing about Auchenflower that most people don’t realize is how perfectly positioned it is for exploring Brisbane without dealing with the tourist crowds. You’ve got the train station literally a five-minute walk away (and I actually timed it), so getting into the city or out to the suburbs is dead simple. But what I really loved was being able to walk to Rosalie – there’s this fantastic coffee scene there that most visitors miss entirely. The townhouse itself feels like staying at a friend’s place, assuming your friend has impeccable taste and actually knows how to make a guest feel welcome. Everything works the way it should, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places mess up the fundamentals. The shower pressure is strong, the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and – this is huge for me – the beds are actually comfortable, not just expensive-looking.
I kept expecting to find something wrong with the place, honestly. That perfect 10 rating seemed too good to be true, but after three nights there, I get it. It’s not flashy or trying to impress you with unnecessary bells and whistles. Instead, it’s just thoughtfully done. The kitchen has everything you’d actually need if you want to cook (proper knives, decent pans, not the usual dull hotel cutlery), and there’s enough space to spread out without feeling like you’re living in each other’s pockets. The location really grows on you too – mornings are peaceful, you can hear birds instead of traffic, but you’re never more than a quick trip away from whatever Brisbane has to offer. I found myself using it as a base for day trips out to the Gold Coast hinterland, then coming back to this quiet pocket of the city to decompress. The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can be a bit tight during peak times, but honestly, with the train station so close, you might not even need a car. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels like a genuine Brisbane experience rather than generic hotel living, this townhouse nails it completely.
