The Glen Hotel and Suites

So I’ve been staying at The Glen Hotel and Suites whenever I’m in Brisbane’s south side, and honestly, it’s become my go-to spot for a reason. The place sits right where Logan Road meets Gaskell Street in Eight Mile Plains – I know, not exactly the sexiest address – but here’s the thing: you’re actually in a pretty sweet spot. It’s about fifteen minutes from the city center without dealing with all that Valley traffic, and you’ve got the Gateway Motorway practically next door if you need to shoot up to the Sunshine Coast or down to the Gold Coast.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel like a proper hotel without all the pretentious stuff you usually get with four-and-a-half stars. The lobby’s got this warm, sort of understated vibe – think modern Australian without trying too hard. Check-in is usually smooth (though I’d avoid Friday afternoons when all the business travelers descend), and the staff actually remembers your name if you’re there for more than a night. The suites are where they really shine though – I mean, you get a proper kitchenette with a decent-sized fridge, not one of those bar fridge jokes. The beds are… well, they’re fantastic, honestly. Memory foam or something similar that doesn’t leave you feeling like you’re sinking into quicksand.

You know what surprised me? How quiet it is at night. Logan Road can get a bit busy during the day – it’s a main drag after all – but by evening it really settles down. There’s decent parking (free, which is getting rare these days), and you’re walking distance to Westfield Garden City if you need to grab groceries or want more dining options than the hotel restaurant. Speaking of which, their breakfast is solid – nothing fancy, but they do a proper coffee and the bacon’s actually crispy. I’ve had the dinner there a few times too, and while it’s not going to win any awards, it’s better than most hotel food and the portions are generous. The pool area’s nice for a quick dip, though it gets a bit crowded on weekends when families are about. One small gripe – the Wi-Fi can be a bit patchy in some of the rooms on the third floor, but everywhere else it’s fine for streaming or video calls. All in all, it’s one of those places that just works, you know? Nothing’s going to blow you away, but nothing’s going to disappoint you either, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re traveling.
