You know what caught me off guard about Sky Tower?
You know what caught me off guard about Sky Tower? It’s actually got this quiet confidence about it that you don’t always find in Brisbane’s CBD hotels. I mean, you’re right there on Margaret Street – literally a three-minute walk to Queen Street Mall if you’re into that scene – but somehow the place doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard to be the flashiest option around.
The building itself is pretty impressive, honestly. When you’re walking up Margaret Street from the river end, you can’t miss it towering above everything else. What I really appreciated though was how AAB has managed the whole operation – check-in was smooth, none of that corporate hotel runaround where you’re standing there for twenty minutes while they “find your reservation.” The staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood too, which is rarer than it should be. One guy at the front desk told me about this little coffee spot on Charlotte Street that I never would’ve found otherwise (and honestly, it was better than the overpriced stuff in the mall).
The rooms are solid – not trying to be boutique-y or overly minimalist, just well thought out. Good blackout curtains, which you’ll need if you’re not used to how bright Brisbane mornings can be. The bathroom actually had decent water pressure, and I’ve stayed in plenty of four-star places where that’s apparently too much to ask for. What really won me over though was the view situation. Depending on which way you’re facing, you either get the city sprawling out toward the Story Bridge, or you can see clear out to the hills on a good day. There’s something about being up that high that makes Brisbane feel less sprawling and more… I don’t know, manageable?
Location-wise, it’s one of those spots where you realize how walkable Brisbane actually is when you’re staying in the right place. I found myself walking to South Bank more often than taking the bus – it’s maybe fifteen minutes if you don’t mind a bit of a stroll, and you go right past the Treasury Casino and those old sandstone buildings if you’re into that sort of architecture. The Queen Street Mall is right there when you need it, but you’re far enough up Margaret Street that you’re not dealing with the weekend crowds stumbling around at 2 AM.
Parking was surprisingly reasonable for CBD standards, though I’d still recommend checking if your rate includes it when you book. The whole area gets pretty quiet after business hours – not dead quiet, but that nice kind of urban calm where you can actually sleep with the windows cracked if the air conditioning gets too much. Brisbane’s like that though, even downtown it settles down earlier than you’d expect.
I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was in town for work stuff around the legal district or wanted to be central without being right in the thick of the Friday night chaos. It’s the kind of place that just works without any drama, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
