I wasn’t expecting much from River Plaza Apartments when I first pulled up to Dock Street – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet corner of Southbank where most tourists never venture. But honestly, that turned out to be one of its best features. While everyone else is fighting crowds at the big hotels along the river, you’re actually living like a local here, and the South Brisbane train station is literally a five-minute walk away.

The apartments themselves are pretty solid for what you’re paying – nothing fancy, but everything works and there’s proper kitchen space if you want to grab groceries from the Woolworths down on Grey Street instead of eating out every meal. I actually appreciated having real plates and decent cooking gear, not those sad little hotel kettles and plastic cups. The balcony views aren’t going to win any awards, but you can catch glimpses of the river if you crane your neck a bit, and honestly, you’ll barely be in your room anyway with the Cultural Centre right across the bridge. What really sold me was how quiet it gets at night – Southbank can be pretty rowdy on weekends, but Dock Street feels almost residential once the sun goes down.

Here’s the thing about this place that most reviews don’t mention: it’s perfectly positioned for anyone who wants to actually explore Brisbane instead of just hitting the tourist spots. The Goodwill Bridge is right there when you want to walk into the city (takes maybe 12 minutes to Queen Street), but you’re also close enough to West End to wander over for proper coffee and that whole hipster food scene. Parking can be a bit tricky – there’s some street parking but it fills up fast, and the paid lot nearby isn’t exactly cheap – but if you’re planning to use public transport anyway, it’s not a deal breaker. The front desk folks are pretty helpful too, not overly chatty but they know the area well and can point you toward the good stuff. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was coming back for a longer trip where having that kitchen space and the quieter location would really matter.
