Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Queensport Tavern And Motel on Gosport Street, I wasn’t expecting much. The name makes it sound like some generic roadside stop, but you know what? This place actually surprised me. It’s tucked away in Hemmant, which most people only know as that suburb you drive through on the way to the airport, but that’s exactly what makes it kind of perfect if you want to stay somewhere that feels authentically Brisbane without the tourist markup.
The building itself has this old-school Australian pub vibe – I mean, it literally is a tavern and motel combo, which sounds sketchy but works surprisingly well. The rooms are cleaner than you’d expect and honestly more comfortable than some of the flashy places I’ve stayed in the city center. What really got me was how quiet it is at night, considering you’re still technically in Brisbane. The locals who drink at the tavern downstairs seem to wrap up at a reasonable hour, so you’re not dealing with that 2 AM drunk crowd nonsense. Plus, there’s actually decent parking, which anyone who’s tried to park in South Brisbane or Fortitude Valley will appreciate. The staff genuinely seem to know the area – when I asked about getting to the Port of Brisbane for an early morning thing, the guy at the front desk didn’t just give me generic directions, he told me about the roadworks on Lytton Road and suggested going through Tingalpa instead.
Here’s the thing about Hemmant that most visitors don’t realize – you’re actually in a pretty sweet spot. Yeah, it’s not walking distance to Queen Street Mall or anything, but you’re close enough to Wynnum if you want to hit the water, and honestly, some of the best Vietnamese food in Brisbane is just a few suburbs over in Darra and Inala (about 20 minutes by car). The 7.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it’s solid and unpretentious. The kind of place where you sleep well, the shower has good pressure, and you’re not paying for a bunch of amenities you won’t use anyway. I’d actually stay here again, especially if I had an early flight or was doing something in the eastern suburbs. Just don’t expect a concierge or room service – this is more about getting a genuine taste of suburban Brisbane without the backpacker hostel chaos or the business hotel sterility.

Clean. Very helpful staff who went beyond to welcome & help in any way they could.
We arrived after midnight on a late international flight and staff kindly left the keys in the night safe for us. Only about 20 mi utes from airport. Parked up close and had a great sleep in clean room.
