So you’re looking at the Mantra South Bank Brisbane – honestly, it’s one of those places that sort of sneaks up on you in a good way. I mean, you walk into the lobby and it’s nice enough, nothing too flashy, but then you start noticing the details. The staff actually seem to know what they’re doing (which, let’s be real, isn’t always a given), and there’s this comfortable buzz about the place that tells you it’s busy for the right reasons.
The location is what really gets me though – 161 Grey St puts you right in the thick of South Bank without being stuck in the tourist madness. You know how some hotels claim they’re “close to everything” but then you’re still walking twenty minutes to get anywhere decent? Not here. The Cultural Centre is literally across the river, and if you’re into the whole South Bank Parklands thing (the lagoon, the weekend markets, all that), you’re basically there already. Plus – and this is something I wish more people talked about – the restaurant scene around here is actually solid. Not just the obvious tourist traps, but proper local spots tucked into the streets behind the hotel.
What I really appreciate is that they’ve got the apartment-style rooms figured out. I stayed in one of their one-bedrooms and honestly, having a proper kitchen makes such a difference when you’re in town for more than just a quick weekend. The washing machine situation alone is worth mentioning – there’s nothing worse than packing dirty clothes or hunting down a laundromat in an unfamiliar city. The rooms themselves are clean and modern without being sterile, though I’ll say the street-facing ones can get a bit noisy during peak hours. Grey Street sees its fair share of traffic, especially when events are on at the Convention Centre. The pool area up top is where you want to spend your downtime anyway – decent views across to the city and usually quiet enough during weekdays. Brisbane’s weather means you’ll probably use it more than you think, even in the shoulder seasons. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury touches, but the 7.7 rating feels about right – it’s solid, reliable, and in a spot where you can actually experience Brisbane properly instead of just passing through it.
