Mantra on Queen

You know what? I’ve walked past Mantra on Queen probably a hundred times before I actually stayed there, and honestly, it’s one of those places that looks way more impressive once you’re inside. The building sits right on Queen Street – and I mean RIGHT on it – so you’re basically in the thick of Brisbane’s retail heartland. Walking out the front door, you’re literally steps from the Queen Street Mall, which is either fantastic or overwhelming depending on your shopping tolerance.

The thing about this place is that it’s sort of caught between worlds in the best possible way. It’s got that 4-star polish without being stuffy, and the staff actually seem to know what they’re talking about when you ask for directions (trust me, not all Brisbane hotels can say that). The rooms are what I’d call “properly sized” – not massive, but you’re not playing furniture Tetris with your luggage either. What really got me was how quiet it manages to be despite being smack in the middle of everything. I mean, you’d expect Queen Street noise all night, but somehow they’ve figured out the soundproofing thing pretty well. The 7.3 rating makes sense when you think about it – it’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town, but it delivers on the basics really solidly.

Here’s the thing locals don’t always mention – being on Queen Street means you’re actually walking distance to some genuinely good stuff. The Treasury Casino is literally around the corner if that’s your thing, and you can cut through to the botanical gardens without dealing with traffic lights. Plus, and this is weirdly important, the Central Station is close enough that you can wheel your luggage there without breaking a sweat, but far enough that you don’t get the constant train rumble. Parking’s about what you’d expect for the CBD – not cheap, but at least it exists. I actually found the whole check-in experience pretty smooth, no weird upselling or making you feel like you’re bothering them. The elevators are decent (faster than the ones at some of the pricier places, honestly), and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. It knows it’s a solid city base, and that’s exactly what it delivers. If you’re the type who wants to be right in the action but still sleep properly at night, this place actually works really well.
