Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of Brisbane hotels, and this place on Ann Street actually surprised me. The name’s a bit of a mouthful – “Luxury Stay With City View – Free Parking,Pool,Wifi” – but honestly, it delivers on all those promises, which is more than I can say for most places that oversell themselves.

The location is what really got me though. Newstead isn’t where most tourists end up, but that’s exactly why it works. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Gasworks Plaza if you need groceries or want to grab coffee at that excellent little roastery there, and the CityCat terminal is close enough that you can actually hear the boats coming and going – which sounds annoying but is actually kind of soothing once you get used to it. The free parking thing is legit too, and I mean, if you’ve ever tried to park anywhere near the CBD, you know that’s worth its weight in gold. They’ve got this little underground garage that feels secure, not like those sketchy street spots where you’re worried about your car getting dinged.

The rooms are proper four-star quality – I was in one of the city view ones on the seventh floor, and you can actually see the Story Bridge lit up at night, which never gets old. The pool area is where I spent most of my downtime though. It’s not huge, but it’s got this nice urban vibe with all the high-rises around you, and the water’s always perfectly heated. There were a few families there during the day, but evenings it was pretty quiet – just the way I like it. The wifi actually works everywhere, even by the pool, which is rarer than you’d think. I was taking calls from the deck chairs without any issues.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the neighborhood. The guy at the front desk – I think his name was Marcus – told me about this Vietnamese place on Commercial Road that I never would have found otherwise, and it ended up being the best meal of my trip. Little things like that make a difference, you know? The housekeeping was spot-on too, though I did notice they come through pretty early if you don’t hang the privacy sign – learned that the hard way on my second morning.

The 9.4 rating isn’t just inflated numbers either. I mean, it’s not perfect – the shower pressure could be better, and there’s a bit of traffic noise from Ann Street in the morning – but for what you’re paying, especially with parking included, it’s genuinely good value. Brisbane’s getting expensive, and finding a place that doesn’t feel like they’re nickeling and diming you is refreshing. If you’re staying for business or just want to be close to the action without being right in the thick of it, this is honestly one of the better options. Just don’t expect resort-style luxury – it’s more like a really well-run city hotel that happens to have a pool and doesn’t charge you extra for breathing.
