Hyatt Regency Brisbane
Hyatt Regency Brisbane
Look, I've stayed at plenty of hotels in Brisbane over the years, and the Hyatt Regency on Queen Street honestly just gets it right.
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels in Brisbane over the years, and the Hyatt Regency on Queen Street honestly just gets it right. The location is absolutely prime – you’re literally in the heart of the CBD, but not in that touristy way where everything feels fake. I mean, you step out the front door and you’re a two-minute walk to the Queen Street Mall, but more importantly, you’re close to all the spots locals actually go to. The Eagle Street Pier is right there (perfect for decent coffee that doesn’t cost a fortune), and you can walk to South Bank without breaking a sweat.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to keep that five-star feeling without being stuffy about it. The lobby’s got this understated elegance thing going on – marble and glass, sure, but it doesn’t feel like you need to whisper. Check-in was smooth, even during that crazy busy period in March when half of Sydney seems to descend on Brisbane. The staff actually know the city well, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about getting to West End for dinner, the concierge didn’t just point me to a taxi – he told me about the CityCat ferry and mentioned the best stop to get off at.
The rooms are what you’d expect from Hyatt, but with some nice touches that show they’re paying attention. Big windows (request a river view if you can – the Brisbane River actually looks pretty spectacular from up there), and the beds are properly comfortable, not just hotel-comfortable. You know what I appreciated? The blackout curtains actually work. Brisbane gets bright early, and there’s nothing worse than being woken up by blazing sunshine when you’re trying to sleep off jet lag. The bathrooms are spacious enough that you’re not doing some weird dance around your luggage, and the water pressure is excellent – honestly, it’s the little things that matter when you’re traveling.
One thing worth mentioning is the pool area. It’s on the sixth floor, and while it’s not huge, it’s got that nice urban oasis vibe. The deck chairs are comfortable, and it’s usually pretty quiet during weekday mornings if you want to actually relax rather than fight for space. The fitness center is well-equipped too, though it can get busy around 6 AM and 7 PM when all the business travelers are trying to squeeze in their workouts.
Food-wise, the restaurant downstairs is solid but not cheap – though that’s pretty standard for hotel dining in the CBD. What I really liked was that they’re walking distance from some of Brisbane’s best food scenes. You can hit up the laneway bars in the evening, or grab breakfast at one of those excellent cafes on Edward Street.
The only minor gripe I have is that Queen Street can get a bit noisy on Friday and Saturday nights – nothing terrible, just the usual city sounds of people having a good time. If you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack some earplugs or request a room facing away from the street. But honestly, for the location and the quality, it’s hard to complain. This is the kind of place where you can base yourself for a proper Brisbane experience without feeling like you’re missing out on anything.
