So I'll be honest – when I first walked up to the Hillcrest Apartment Hotel on Vulture Street, I wasn't expecting much.
So I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Hillcrest Apartment Hotel on Vulture Street, I wasn’t expecting much. The name change from Central Hillcrest Apartments probably should’ve been my first clue that they’d been working on things, but you know how it is with apartment hotels. Sometimes they’re just glorified motels with a kitchenette thrown in. This place actually surprised me though.
The location is what really sold me on it. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the South Brisbane train station, which means you can get into the city without dealing with parking (and trust me, parking in Brisbane’s CBD will eat your wallet alive). But here’s the thing most people don’t realize – you’re also walking distance to the Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA, plus all those riverside restaurants along Grey Street. I mean, I stumbled onto some fantastic Vietnamese place just two blocks over that I never would’ve found if I’d stayed in the touristy areas. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel that’s way more interesting than the sanitized hotel districts.
What I appreciated most was how functional everything felt. The apartments – and they really are proper apartments, not just hotel rooms with a mini-fridge – have full kitchens that you’d actually want to cook in. The guy at reception mentioned they’d renovated most of the units recently, and you can tell. Nothing fancy, but the appliances work, there’s decent counter space, and the WiFi doesn’t cut out every ten minutes like at some places. The washing machines in-unit are a godsend if you’re staying more than a few days. Honestly, after a week of wearing the same three shirts in tropical humidity, being able to do laundry without hunting down a laundromat felt like luxury.
The building itself is pretty quiet – I was worried about street noise since Vulture Street gets busy during rush hour, but the windows are decent and once you’re inside, it’s surprisingly peaceful. I stayed on the fourth floor and could actually sleep past 6 AM, which doesn’t always happen in city hotels. The staff seems to know what they’re doing too. Check-in was straightforward, and when my air conditioning started making weird noises on day three, they had someone up to fix it within a couple hours. Not bad for a 4-star place.
Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy lobbies. There’s no pool, no spa, no rooftop bar with panoramic views. But if you want a solid base for exploring Brisbane without paying resort prices, and you appreciate having actual living space instead of just a bed and a bathroom, this works really well. The 7.9 rating feels about right – it’s good at what it does without trying to be something it’s not. Plus, being in South Brisbane means you’re close to everything but not in the middle of the Friday night chaos on Queen Street. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

What Our Guests Say
Staff were very accommodating, friendly and helpful. The room was a good size although the beds were extremely close together. The beds were firm but fresh & clean. Very quiet despite being next to a busy road.
Great location for Mater private hospital
Good location, bus very close that takes you to South Bank in only too stops, very clean and very helpful and friendly staff. I would highly recomment Hillcrest Apartment Hotel.
Location
The room, the beds, the staff, the balcony. Ease of entry, great parking, quiet rooms. Returned for 4th time , 3rd time with my impossible to impress daughter, who requests it when we catch up.
Location -the mater hospital is right next door
It was right next door to the Mater private hospital. From the hospital we could access the Mater Hill train station. At the bottom of the hill on Vulture st we could access the train station where we could go into the city and also directly to and from the airport. Woolworths was also located at the train station. From this location also we could walk to Southbank.
Location was perfect for my requirements. Comfortable bed and adequate amenities.
I liked the cleanliness, and spaciousness of the room and the staff checking in was very polite and helpful even though we were 40 minutes early.
It’s so convenient to hospitals and south bank activities
