I’ll be honest – when I first walked into this top-floor apartment on Merivale Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the star rating doesn’t tell the whole story. This little one-bedroom actually surprised me, and I’ve stayed in enough Brisbane places to know when something’s genuinely decent versus just trying too hard.

The location is what really makes this work – I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the South Bank Parklands, which honestly beats staying in some sterile hotel tower in the CBD. You can hear the city hum but it’s not that aggressive traffic noise that keeps you up at night. The apartment sits high enough that you get these glimpses of the river if you crane your neck from the living room window, and there’s something oddly satisfying about being perched up there watching Brisbane go about its business below. The building itself is nothing fancy – sort of that mid-2000s Brisbane architecture that’s everywhere around South Bank – but the apartment inside has been done up nicely. Clean lines, decent furniture that doesn’t look like it came from a hotel catalog, and the bed is actually comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses, so this matters).

What I really appreciated was how it felt like someone’s actual home rather than a corporate rental. There are proper coffee mugs instead of those tiny hotel ones, the shower has decent water pressure, and the kitchen has everything you’d need if you grabbed groceries from the Woolworths down on Grey Street. Speaking of which – and this is local knowledge talking – skip the tourist traps along South Bank and walk ten minutes to West End for proper coffee and food. The apartment’s position makes that easy, plus you’re close enough to catch the CityCat from South Bank terminal without lugging your bags too far. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle around here, especially on weekends when everyone’s hitting the markets, but they sort that out for you which removes one headache. Check-in was straightforward enough, though I did have to coordinate timing since it’s not a traditional hotel setup. The 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers on what it promises. If you want marble bathrooms and a concierge, look elsewhere. But if you want a clean, comfortable base that puts you right in the heart of South Bank without paying city hotel prices, this works really well. Perfect for a weekend exploring Brisbane or if you’re in town for something at the Convention Centre and want to walk instead of dealing with taxis.
