I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to City View Arthouse on Musgrave Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The building has this sort of understated artsy vibe that you don’t immediately notice from the street, but once you’re inside, it actually makes sense. It’s tucked into Red Hill, which is one of those Brisbane neighborhoods that feels residential but is surprisingly close to everything – you’re maybe ten minutes from the city center, but you’d never know it from how quiet this stretch gets at night.
The whole “arthouse” thing isn’t just marketing fluff, which honestly surprised me. There’s actual local artwork throughout the lobby and hallways, and I mean real pieces, not those generic hotel prints that could be anywhere. My room had this quirky painting of the Brisbane River that I kept staring at – turned out it was by some local artist whose name I promptly forgot, but you know what I mean. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re comfortable enough, though don’t expect luxury at this price point. What I really appreciated was the attention to small details – good lighting for reading, decent water pressure (always a gamble in older buildings), and windows that actually open, which is rarer than you’d think these days. The air conditioning worked fine, though it’s one of those units that sounds like it’s working really hard to keep up during Brisbane’s summer months.
Location-wise, you’re in a sweet spot here. Musgrave Road connects you to pretty much everywhere you want to go – South Bank’s about fifteen minutes on a good day, though obviously Brisbane traffic can be unpredictable. There’s a decent coffee shop about two blocks down that opens early (Coffee Club, nothing fancy but gets the job done), and if you’re into that whole farmer’s market scene, the Red Hill weekend market is walkable. Parking was actually easier than I expected – they have their own small lot, and street parking isn’t too brutal if you’re willing to walk a block or two. The staff seemed genuinely helpful rather than just going through the motions, which made check-in pretty smooth even though I arrived earlier than I probably should have. One thing to note – the walls aren’t exactly soundproof, so if you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack earplugs. It’s not terrible, but you’ll hear your neighbors if they’re having a good time. Overall though, for a three-star place with a 7.1 rating, City View Arthouse delivers on being something a little different without trying too hard to be quirky. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere with actual personality rather than just another generic hotel room.
