Look, I’ve driven past the Benson Court Motel probably a hundred times on my way through Toowong, and honestly? I always figured it was just another roadside place you’d forget about. But when I actually needed somewhere to crash for a few nights last month – well, turns out I was completely wrong about this little spot.

The thing is, Benson Street isn’t some flashy tourist strip, which is actually part of what makes this place work. You’re tucked away in proper residential Toowong, where you can hear the occasional train rumbling by (not loud enough to wake you, just enough to remind you you’re in a real neighborhood), and it’s maybe a seven-minute walk to the train station if you need to zip into the city. The woman at check-in – I think her name was Margaret – knew exactly which rooms get the morning sun and which ones stay cooler, and she set me up perfectly without me even asking. That’s the kind of local knowledge you don’t get at the big chains, you know?

What really surprised me was how much thought went into the small stuff. The room itself was clean in that “someone actually cares” way, not just the surface-level tidy you sometimes get. Decent shower pressure (honestly, you never know with older motels), and the air conditioning worked without sounding like a helicopter landing. The bed was firm but comfortable – I mean, I slept solidly every night, which for me is saying something. There’s parking right outside your door, which might sound basic but try finding that in most of Brisbane without paying through the nose. And here’s something I didn’t expect: the little courtyard area out back is actually pretty peaceful. Nothing fancy, just some chairs and a bit of greenery, but it’s a nice spot to sit with your coffee in the morning before the day gets busy.

The location really grew on me too. Sure, you’re not in the thick of South Bank or anything, but Toowong’s got this relaxed vibe that’s hard to find closer to the CBD. There’s a decent café about three minutes’ walk away (grab the bacon and egg roll, trust me), and if you need groceries or whatever, the shopping center’s right there. Plus – and this might matter if you’re driving – getting in and out is so much easier than dealing with city traffic. You can be at the university in ten minutes, the city in fifteen, or heading out to the western suburbs without any drama.

I went in expecting basic and forgettable, but the Benson Court actually delivers something better: it’s genuinely comfortable without trying too hard. The staff clearly know what they’re doing, the price doesn’t make you wince, and you’ll probably sleep better than you would in some fancier places that spend more on lobby marble than actual guest comfort. It’s the kind of place you’d recommend to your cousin visiting from interstate – not because it’s fancy, but because you know they’ll be looked after properly.
